Based between Seoul and Hangzhou, Suhyun Roh works across video, photography, installation, and workshops. Her work centers on experiences of loss and rupture, tracing how personal sensations extend into places, environments, and relationships with others. She is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art.

Redevelopment changes more than human lives. Animals and plants living there also face sudden changes to the places they have inhabited, without choice or warning.

Cities contain both planned nature and structures made to keep certain animals away. Yet birds bring plastic, wire, cables, and even anti-bird spikes into their own environments, making them part of their surroundings.

This work begins with questions of who can remain in the city, who is pushed out, and who decides those boundaries.

On what is displaced and made to move, and on homes that are never permanent.

The city allows some to remain while pushing others away. This logic of exclusion does not apply only to non-human life. Structures built to keep birds away sometimes become their nests, while the cities people build do not always welcome people.

On who is allowed to remain, who is made to leave, and how materials of exclusion can become a home.

In this work, home seems less like a fixed place than something that continues to take shape through memories and objects. Rather than remaining permanent or complete, it takes shape for a time, disappears, and takes on a different form elsewhere.

항저우도 놀러오세요 💓 taken in Seoul, South Korea by @sui.roh

Moments from Tuesday’s <Home Sweet Home> Workshop at @paral_hz

It was my first time leading a workshop in Chinese. So grateful to everyone who joined 🍙🖤

Home-cooked food can recall “home” through taste, smell, sound, and texture. But home means something different to each person: it can be a concrete space with size, layout, and conditions, or it can exist as a memory, a scene, a sound, or the people once lived with. Home Sweet Home is a participatory workshop where participants use gimbap seaweed, rice, and ingredients connected to their own memories of home-cooked food to make an “ideal home.” They create a floor plan or a small three-dimensional structure, then look at it, talk about it, and eat it together, experiencing the home as something temporary that is made, shared, and disappears.

Continuation is currently traveling to New York with 1/2 Library @halflibrary

🍐

As we live, wounds shape us: some leave scars, others fade.
Continuation reflects on this quiet truth—our bodies, like all we hold, eventually return to nature.

My work centres on capturing and expressing experiences of loss and what shapes us in life. These images were formed through my process of coming to terms with wounds, illness, and loss.

Among the images in this book, Complications is a series that began while I was in China, hearing over the phone about my father being repeatedly admitted to and discharged from the hospital in Korea. From a distance, I tried to imagine his pain in my own way. My images are a way of looking at the pain that runs through life—sometimes grasped only later, or quietly facing an absence before it arrives.

📨 ICP Photobook Fest 2026

📍 84 Ludlow Street, New York, NY 10002
🗓 May 8-10

Friday, May 8, 12PM–7PM
Saturday, May 9, 11AM–7PM
Sunday, May 10, 12 PM–5PM

──────

1/2 Library is an experimental project initiated by artist Song Lu @real_songlu in 2026, transforming half of her booth into a walkable micro-library for independent publications.
By juxtaposing artists’ works with handwritten notes left by readers, it creates a space where narratives of family, memory, and identity slowly come into dialogue.

Glad to be showing alongside a group of wonderful women artists 🤝
