“Protected” - I rarely know what a collage is about when I begin. I find an image that draws me in and start moving things around, waiting for the story to emerge. This one began with the figure on the left, her back turned and her face obscured. I began building around her with another piece of patterned fabric, a butterfly wing, a mountain, a bird, a flower (see carousel). Nothing “clicked”.

Then I found the second woman carrying a baby on her back. When I placed the three figures together, I saw generations. I imagined the first woman as someone who may have passed. I thought about my late mother whose presence is felt in my everyday life; even the garments reminded me of Mom’s saris. The women and their garments seemed to fold around the baby, creating a place of protection.

I thought about the ordinary work of mothering: carrying children, protecting them, bearing their weight. We exalt motherhood, but so much of it is simply ordinary women doing what women have always done.

I didn’t set out to make a piece about any of this. I found the story by making the collage.

Offering // This one changed a lot as I worked on it. It started with two elephants, mountains, a bird, more color, more everything! I sort of fell for the way the elephant seemed to be looking at the woman. So, I took most of the elements away I made it more about this little moment of offering. #collageoftheday

This collage was made in response to an open call by @collageandculture on lapis lazuli. I started with the blue color story and found my way into the history of the stone. The mountains symbolize how far it has traveled through many cultures; the jewel, preciousness; the figure, power and luxury.

Thank you @collageandculture - I enjoyed spending time with this prompt!

FEVER DREAM. For this one I gave myself one constraint: RED. Obviously, I veered from that a bit, but I enjoyed the process of limiting my “palette”. It came together in one two-hour session which felt like a fever dream in itself!

Artists, what’s a constraint you’ve enjoyed working within lately?
