When you need a thing, call me… 🤙🏽💁🏽‍♀️✨

(… If the thing you need is a sassy kizomba fusion lady styling choreo with a touch of freestyle, that is 😉)

Gotta say, I quite enjoy the challenge of creating a choreo that needs to be beginner-friendly yet adaptable for advanced students, while still being fun in its simplest form (oh, and teachable in one hour 😅) 🎶

Drop your fave part in the comments 😍💃🏽

Happy International Dance Day! 💃🏽

Anyone who has spent even five minutes with me in the past few months will know of my love of dancing (yes, I am slowly becoming that slightly insufferable person)—a love that was reignited after a few difficult years and the decision to fill my life with the things that bring me joy in 2023. The result? The decision to begin learning three different dance styles, and also to return to my first love, Samba.

While in the simplest sense, it’s movement to music, in reality, for me, it’s so much more than that.

It’s happiness. It’s an escape. It’s a celebration of what the body can do, not what it looks like. It’s a lesson in being completely present. It’s community. It’s connection. It’s where friendships have formed. It’s a route to the heart and history of so many rich cultures. It’s—cliché but true—a journey.

And as much as I love dance itself, it wouldn’t run as deep as it does without all the incredibly dedicated and passionate teachers I’ve had the privilege of learning from over the years. I have gained something (many things!) from every single one of you. Thank you for enriching my life—one count of eight at a time. 💃🏽 by @sukidances

Our history together ⬇️😍 @sukritiwahi

An Indian 🇮🇳 girl from Australia 🇦🇺 met a Brazilian-Spanish 🇧🇷 🇪🇸 girl in Sydney 🇦🇺 dancing kizomba 🇦🇴 only to reunite in Sevilla 🇪🇸 to dance Samba 🇧🇷

Is not a crazy one? 😍

So proud to have her as a student and also as a friend! Aaaand, do you know what? She created that samba choreo! For sure she is Brazilian inside too 😂🫶🏽

1, 2, 3 or 4? ✨📸💃🏽

Also, a moment for the man behind the camera, @sydneydancemedia (catch his cameo in action on slide 5, hehe), who is one of the kindest and most supportive people in the scene. He was also one of the first people to encourage me when I started kizomba and saw potential even when I didn’t 🙏🏽🫶🏽 by @sukidances

Another RENDEZ-VOUS in the books 💜

A look back at our last class together, taught by Susan & Suki. Every month each of you have been improving and it’s been an absolute pleasure watching you all grow and seeing a base for kompa & gouyad grow in Sydney at Rendez-Vous!

Thank you to everyone who came through and shared the energy with us. 🫶🏽

And now… we do it all again tonight! 🔥

POV: You (unexpectedly 😅) get thrown into a semba demo with the amazing @bonifacioaurio and @king_chamalo—the first artists you learned from years ago, in this very hall, at the very start of your “kizomba world” journey 💫

Had to throw back to this full-circle moment from mid last year because the semba cravings are real (especially after watching @constancewck and @elif.mfp’s blindfolded Jack’n’Jill video from the @multiverse_kizomba_congress festival 🤩👏🏽). I love the energy of semba and it’s not played nearly often enough for my liking!

I didn’t know it at the time, but my life was going to change in this studio ✨

I didn’t know that what I’d find here in early 2023 — finally able to dance again after years of chronic fatigue — would reignite a fire in me and take me across the world. Bali, Paris, Amsterdam, Seville… to name a few.

I also didn’t know that in each place, united by dance, I would find “my people”.

Finally, I didn’t know I that would find a puzzle piece I didn’t realise had been missing from my life since I moved to Sydney in 2017:

A “third place” and a whole community — something many of us struggle to find as adults as we lead increasingly busy lives (and there is a difference between community and friendship!).

I recently wrote about this experience, everything it’s given me, and friendship vs. community for @bed.threads Journal — full story at the link in my bio if you fancy a read ☕️

Thank you @arabella_peterson for the space and encouragement to continue my foray into first-person territory. And, most of all, big love to @latinjunction, my third place, and all the students and teachers there, for truly changing my life 💃🏽 by @sukidances

I just needed this ✨

… And, yes, I’m acutely aware of the irony of this message being delivered via video 😅 But hear me out!

I kinda love that it’s not smash-you-in-point-3-seconds Algorithm Juice (and therefore probably won’t “do well”… oh well!). My friend just decided to pan the room and caught me.

It’s not 4k footage. Not even close.
There are no flashy moves.
“Simple” musical flow.
Smiles. Eye contact. To the very end-end.
We never even look at the camera.

Frankly, I genuinely didn’t know we were being filmed. (Just as well, or the performer in me would have kicked in 🙈)

To be honest, I am not normally one to film my social dances (demos and practise = different story) partly for this reason. And also because I feel videos can “compress” the memory of how the dance *felt*. I think we (ok, I) can become fixated on how the dance looked—because we all watch our dances back on loop to analyse… riiiight, guys?! 😅—over what we experienced in real time.

And sometimes a beautiful dance connection doesn’t translate on camera.

Sometimes a performed dance looks amazing and has *zero* connection.

And what are we *partner* dancing for if not to connect? I am a solo dancer too (first!). I enjoy dancing alone. I have performed and done choreographies my whole life. I love that side of dance as well!

But that’s just not what I want from my social dance.

And before anyone comes for me: I’m not anti-filming or “cool moves” 😝🎥

I just don’t think we *need* to do them to have a fun dance with amazing connection. And probably shouldn’t at the expense of it.

Icing on the cake… but let’s remember the cake is why we came! 🎂

And hopefully why we stay 💃🏽✨

(Thanks for coming to my TED Talk… Now, off to the Kizomba room! 🎶)
