This goes out to all women who are growing along with me. There was a time when I thought life was about getting everything right- the career, the appearance, the plan, the next milestone. Then somewhere along the way, wisdom arrived disguised as a few (to many) grey hairs, a few detours and a growing appreciation for who and what I am. Not trying to blend in but having the courage to stand out, even if I am alone and imperfect. Now the goal isn’t perfection. It’s freedom. Freedom to change. Freedom to evolve. Freedom to be gloriously imperfect. My hair seems to have understood this before I did — once straight, now with a wild mind of its own, refusing to follow instructions. 😜 Perhaps that’s what this season of life is about: less control, less perfect, more acceptance, more living. Here’s to the #SlowLiving and #agingwithgrace mindset — where we stop trying to be perfect and start being ourselves. You just don’t go to Bordeaux for wines!! Yes it is the holy grail for wines but wake up a bit earlier and you catch the beauty of Central Park along with a soaking up into the history of Bordeaux! It’s an 11 ha of green park bursting with magnolia, Lily and hydrangea that was awarded the “Jardin Remarkable” in the 19th century appellation where wine traders could meet up and discuss business while breathing in fresh air. I woke up and a refreshing 5k was just the best thing to harmonize with a busy day of wine tasting! As many of you know, mindful drinking has been the top in my agenda since 2012 when I began my journey in the wine industry. Over the years, I have consciously balanced my wine experiences with focus on health, fitness and periods of abstinence believing that appreciation, wellbeing and moderation MUST go hand in hand. Being a fitness enthusiast, the NO-AND LOW ALCOHOL category is an important part of my exploration of a more complete three-dimensional approach to wine and lifestyle. With that in mind, I recently enjoyed a wonderful personalized tasting @fortnums exploring alcohol-free beverages. Special shout out to Liana whose knowledge and patience guided me through a fascinating range of sparkling teas and Korean drinks sector and to Jack on his viticultural study background @plumptonwine enriching it with experience in retail. A select of these no alcohol beverages will be making a special appearance at my no-alcohol tasting and social evening tonight. I look forward to hearing what others think of this increasingly sophisticated category. Eight weeks ago, I stepped away from wine, work and routine to discover a different side of myself on the Everest Base Camp trail. It wasn’t well planned, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed. Seven months on, recovering from a fractured foot and an emergency surgery just before departure, I was reminded how fragile life can be. We can plan every detail, but sometimes a greater hand is quietly steering the boat. Last week marked my return to wine with a glass of Fratelli Chenin Blanc while leaving India @airindia. Fresh, vibrant and easy-drinking, with notes of tropical fruit and citrus, it was the perfect toast to completing Everest Base Camp against all odds. The mountains left me with one lasting lesson: life is not about perfect preparation; you got to play your cards, take some risk and be prepared to face the result. Like you, I am not immune to challenges. I am now learning to take each as an opportunity to self reflect, reset, reinvent myself to unfold new stories ahead….. Since 2013 I have worked across varied roles in the wine industry. Along the way I have met extraordinary people and many inspiring #womeninwine that I have published through my journalistic endeavors. But like many, I have also been a victim of quiet pressures behind the industry : the fear of exclusion, the need to prove ourselves, the constant comparison, am I white enough to be accepted, am I too old, am I worth it. Right now wine as a product itself faces a difficult moment. But challenging times does not mean we abandon our people. The money does matter. But faith and passion matter as much - they are what help us improvise, create and keep building. Don’t miss the stories and impact of people working hard while running to catch up with the product. The journey is not about who gets the most likes or who appears the most visible on social media. It is about the work, the contribution - big or small, the glass shared, the smallest discovery in a vineyard or the serendipity in winemaking or the tweak in wine marketing that put back your smile at the end of the day. While I would like to put the extra focus on women today for the multitudes of job juggling, struggles that we face on a daily basis, I would also like to raise a glass to all friends and partners of these women (regardless of race, gender or culture) who have been through us thick and thin to keep our faith alive, keep our curiosity alive, bounce back from shocks and defeats and never let ourselves down. Dorney 10K - Drenched and wet, yet kept my feet up. Finished fifth in my age category. Chuffed that I could get back my sportsman-ship despite my accident and injuries. Running in your 50s is about redefining performance. You don’t need to stay at the top, but you need to stay in control. You may still break or hurt once in a while.
