The theme of these arrangements was to create something that could be appreciated from all angles, keeping a 360-degree view in mind. 😵‍💫

BTW, I’ve started asking my workshop participants to share photos of their Ikebana creations. It started with my friend @dugtigger 🧚 in France, with whom I did a mini workshop. And somehow, one thing led to another, and more photos started coming my way! 🥹

It makes me feel grateful to know that something from our little workshops stays with people, and perhaps grows into something of their own. And it motivates me to put even more thought and care into my workshops. 🌱📚💚 by @suminumi_berlin

These are something I did before my vacation, and a few weeks later, they’re finally up.

The theme was to repeat the same shape.

Speaking of the same shape, I think of #yayoikusama , the queen of dot art.

My mom was born 10 years after her, and she disliked Kusama’s art so much. I think my mom’s dislike came from this feeling of 気持ち悪い unsettling, maybe?

Indeed, when I went to see her show at Gropius Bau, I also had a bit of a chill down my back because of her obsession. Her repetition of the same or similar shapes was done on such a huge scale (while my work is just on my vase, so not intense at all. It’s kinda cute, haha). She must have been quite obsessed to create art like that. And somehow, when it’s done on such a large scale, it shows both sides more intensely. Light and darkness.

Maybe my mom didn’t like her art precisely because of this eerie feeling, and perhaps also because of the public perception of her art at that time. She couldn’t really explain why she didn’t like it, though, so this is only my guess. But I’m pretty certain that my own feeling isn’t so far apart from hers.

I think it’s quite cool that she is one of the few Japanese women artists, along with someone like @yokoono . I’m not even sure if what I feel is “pride.” Somehow saying I’m proud feels a little strange, or even a bit self conscious, embarrassing? Mmm. I don’t really know. Happy Monday 💙

Themes are:

Showing the roots and weaving the plants.

My nephew is in town, and I’ve somehow given myself the mission of teaching him something about life. No one asked. But honestly, it feels like my efforts aren’t really landing, especially when I step into a role I’m not used to.

I wish I had understood earlier what I know now. Perhaps that’s why I feel the need to pass it on.

More than anything, I want him to learn who he is, to understand the history that shaped the world around him, and to believe that he can help make it a better place.

I mean, it’s kind of nice to feel my own roots and weave them into the time I live in. taken in Berlin, Germany by @suminumi_berlin

Happy Tanabata 七夕🎋

暦の上では今日は小暑。。。
本日のベルリンは夏には程遠い天気。
肌寒い。

今日のポスト用の音楽を探していたら、七夕演歌リストに辿り着いた😅　両親がよく聴いていた演歌。今度じっくり聴いてみよう。

ここ一か月ちょい、いけばなをどのように伝えるべきか考え続け、プレゼンっぽいものを作って、頭に叩き込んだけど、果たして私の説明に一貫性があるのか、正しいことを伝えているのか。大いに疑問。辛いけど楽しい作業。

Two big ⚽️ losses yesterday. 😭

But even sadder is the passing of Akihiro Miwa #美輪明宏 an actor, singer, and a deeply cultured person, truly a fountain of wisdom.

He taught me to believe that art and culture are what make us stronger as human beings, not weapons, not war, not power.

It feels like a huge spiritual loss for Japan. He taught us so much about how to live as human beings, almost like a compass for life. taken in Berlin, Germany by @suminumi_berlin
