Grim Tidings was quite the mixed bag of a book club pick this last month, but I have to say I adored my time with it! While it definitely wasn’t a five star masterpiece, I feel like it did just about everything it set out to achieve and the vibes were immaculate 😌

One of the first things I appreciated about Grim Tidings was that it went and filled in a lot of questions that I was left with after Good Spirits! I LOVED how integrated the department as a whole was to this story and all of the Good Spirits references, tie-ins, and cameos!!! 😍 These new deets didn’t add up to the most masterful world building of all time which as a huge fantasy reader is something I crave - but I do give it a slight pass because I know that’s not what BK Borison sets out to achieve with these books!

Secondly, this set of characters was to die for 🥲 Frank’s story had my entire heart and I wanted more of it!!! Tater-tot is easily a new pet companion fave for me as well 🥰 And Darcy and Gabriel were literally perfect. The spice scenes, the tension, the banter, it was all KILLLLLLINNGG me!!!!!

While it seems being left with some questions is something to expect from the Ghosted series - this was such a fun and quick read that gave me all the feels 🥹 If you’re someone who isn’t really into contemporary romance but you want some light/medium spice and cozy Halloween vibes without delving into the commitment of a new fantasy - this would definitely be a great read for you!

Is Grim Tidings on your Fall TBR?

One thing about me is I love a good wrap up 😏 SEPTEMBER WAS SUCH A BANGER!!! I mean in a general sense the month actually kind of sucked - but man did I read some good books!

For starters I had two five star reads in one month with The Knave and the Moon and The Butchers Masquerade 😱 I think this has been my fave DCC thus far!
I gave Alchemised 4.5 stars and I think about it every day still. The Unknown was unexpectedly delightful! Half His Age was meh.

Stats this month were fun because Matt Dinniman has officially taken the lead over Fredrik Backman as my top read author this year!

For current reads I’m wrapping up with Threshing Day 💔 and I just started Raven Kennedy’s newest book, The Sweetest Fiend, which is a play on the pied piper. So far the audio is living up to the expectations The Plated Prisoner series set me up with and I’m LOVING it!!!

What is everyone reading right now?!

P.S. Vireth says hi.

The Knave and the Moon was completely remarkable. A thousand stars. No notes. I will NEVER get over Rachel Gillig.

I thought everything about this from the first page was absolute perfection and I was simply in awe by how phenomenally the story was told.

My expectations going into this were NOT low and by golly did Rachel deliver. She writes worlds that are truly so unique, immersive, and magical. She makes you laugh while simultaneously delivering a powerful story about love and faith and sacrifice. And her characters??? My GOD! What a gift it was to know Sybil, Bartholomew, Rory, and Maude 🩶🩶
The Knave and the Moon has officially cemented The Stonewater Kingdom as my favorite duology. Like ever.

“‘To be seen clearly is not a gift all of us are given. Some might look upon Bartholomew and see a stone object, and others look upon her’ — he batted his eyelashes at me — ‘and see the whole world over.’”

“I stared up at the night sky and the moon it held, my oldest companion, and wept. There was light to touch, yet. Things to dream of, yet.”

I’ve finished Alchemised. Alchemised has finished me? What’s really important is that I loved this in a way that I don’t even know what to say about it.

I gave it 4.25 stars because 4 didn’t feel like enough but 5 didn’t feel quite right? But in the same breath it isn’t like I could tell you one thing I would have changed about the experience.

World building, characters, plot - everything was so sick and so perfect. I adore Helena to no end and Kaine has my entire heart right now. I’m obsessed with Amaris 🥰 I did not cry once which I think is worth noting but I did feel like I had my lungs ripped out a few times. The ending?? Not at all what I expected! I think I’m pleased? But it did feel a little easy after everything we went through to get there?

All in all - I do recommend it for anyone who is curious! There are a lot of triggering themes and grotesque scenes that truly would not be suitable for some readers though, so as always be sure to take care of your mental health and check into that before diving in!

September is HERE and it is bringing with it some incredibly wicked book releases! Let’s talk about each one of them a little bit!!

• The Knave and the Moon | If you read The Knight and the Moth you know the cliffhanger we’ve been abused with and my excitement over this release needs no words.

• Hollywood, Ending | High School romance king John Green gives us his first adult novel! Dual POV Hollywood romance following 2 actors cast in an Andy Warhol biopic.

• Threshing Day | iykyk.

• Switzy | A great bookclub pick. Follows a retired executive as he travels to Switzerland.

• Love at Least | Described as The Bell Jar for 21st century Japan. A darkly comedic story about a young Japanese woman battling depression and searching for human connection.

• Hollow Bones | A gut-wrenching tale about the complexities of motherhood.

• Exit Party | It’s 2031 and has been one year since the US collapsed. There’s a party, a disappearance, and one woman who may be able to find him.

• Burn of the Everflame | I have yet to read this series but ya’ll get Kindred’s Curse number 4 and I’m excited for you!

• Grim Tidings | BK Borison hits us with Ghosted book 2 which follows a lady grim reaper I can’t wait to meet!

What September release are you most excited to pick up?!

August reading wrapped! It was honestly just okay 👌
Rites of the Starling was PHENOMENAL so I started the month really strong, but then Phoebe Berman’s Gonna Lose It was quick to bring things downhill 😂 It put me in a bit of a slump. Then I finished up the month with My Friends which was another masterpiece, but not a perfect fit for me personally!

✨Fun updates:
• Fredrick Backman has quickly become a top author this year for me which says something since he’s competing next to Matt Dinniman as I barrel through DCC 😋
• Three more granny squares to crochet and I’ll be all caught up on my book blanket! I can’t wait to start attaching them because I can already tell it’s going to look sick!
• I’m a little over half on both Alchemised and The Butcher’s Masquerade and they are phenommmm. Is this my fave DCC so far?? Maybe.

What is everyone reading right now? HAS ANYONE STARTED THE KNAVE AND THE MOON YET????

While Phoebe Berman spent 304 pages hyper fixating on losing her virginity before the prime age of 30 - I was certainly losing it too. I lost my patience, I lost interest, and I even lost my will to live somewhere in there.

IM GOING TO START WITH THE POSITIVES. This book is only 304 pages long and is super fast on audio. There were some funny moments along with some cutie moments, and Matthew was just lovely. It was also a lot of fun to talk about with book club! The cover is obviously fantastic.

NOW MOVING ON. Phoebe Berman sucks. She’s a shit friend and made being a virgin aggressively everyone else’s problem. She was immature, insufferable, and obnoxious and I literally hated her in less than an hour. She’s narrated by the author herself and that made it even worse for me because her voice didn’t do anything for her 🥲 It grated my brains. It’s no wonder Phoebe is a virgin because she has the emotional maturity of a 10-12 year old.

Her list was hands down the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of and her laminating it gave me the biggest ick. She loves a temper tantrum and I think she’s also walking a really fine line of sexual harassment in the workplace 😆😆

All in all, I read this with my book club where it received a 1.83 star average from us as a group. It felt like a middle grade book about a middle grade girl, but built on an adult premise. The mental health representation I’ve been hearing so much about really sucked as much as Phoebe herself did, and none of us are really sure why everyone seems to love this so much 😅

Have you read Phoebe Berman’s Gonna Lose It?

This is my second experience with Fredrik Backman - my first being the Beartown trilogy - and I will be reading everything this man has written! It’s unbelievable the magic he is able to put on paper.

At times this one fell ever so slightly flat for me, but I think it was only due to a slight personal disconnect in that I’ve never really experienced a friendship like this book is (broadly) about. I’ve never really been someone who made connections easily, so finding people I genuinely connect with means more to me than I can probably put into words. I thought the relationships depicted here were the most beautiful thing.

Fredrik Backman has a magical way of making everyone feel everything, regardless of your life experience, and thats what i love so much about him. And I’m sorry can we acknowledge how many times this book made me laugh too?!

All in all I’m 4 books into reading all of the 13 Fredrik Backman has published. I think I would rank Beartown above this, but I would still recommend this with my FULL chest!

Have you read any Fredrik Backman? Is so which is your favorite?!

How is my journey through Alchemised going you may ask? 🤪

Well, for starters, I made it about 5 chapters in before I switched over to my kindle and I have no shame in that.

Furthermore, this is f*cked. Something is seriously more wrong with me than I thought because I am loving every second of it. Idk I’m only 30% through and I don’t want to spoil anything so I guess that’s all 🤣🤣

BUT if you have read it already please throw me a life raft and lmk because I need to talk about it??? 🥵 I’m a few chapters into part 2 and screaming.
