This post is dedicated to my beautiful Nritya Yoga teacher, Amrita Choudhury. These pictures are from her tour here in Austin and at the Texas Yoga Retreat in 2024.Somewhere around 20 years ago, Amrita introduced me to an experience of yoga which is vibrant, alive, colorful, joyful, soulful, proundly powerful, compassionate, gentle, full of light, peaceful, and serene.I am humbled, honored, and grateful, that I have had the opportunity to study with her, in such a close and personal way, and also, spanning a great distance, through online classes.Amrita transformed my understanding and experience of yoga. The practice of Nrityoga is by far, the most profoundly potent and therapeutic practice I have ever encountered. It continually transforms, uplifts, and supports me. Elements of this practice are infused into my Hatha Yoga practice and teaching.I am always grateful for our connection. It is one of the most important sources of light in my life.I look forward to continuing our relationship and to her next continuation of online classes, with gratitude and love. ❤️🙏#nrityoga #mudras #yoga by @summergreenlees

Restorative YogaIn my restorative Yoga class, we use props like bolsters, blankets, chairs, walls, straps, and more options to support the body in positions that allow our vital circulation and energy to be “deposited” into instead of “withdrawn” from our deep, inner organs, glands, and energy reserves. Because the props and gravity are doing the work of holding or maintaining the arrangement/position of the body, the musculoskeletal system, frontal cranial brain, and the aspect of our nervous system that is normally the “doer”, or driver, during our everyday activities, is allowed to rest, have a break, or take a passenger role. The deep, soft, inner body, organs, glands, and parasympathetic (rest, digest, heal, restore, repair) regenerative aspect of our innate, embodied intelligence and nervous system is what is accessed. In restorative Yoga, what we are restoring is our connection to this profound and powerful inner resource. I am always reminded of the light that is the energy behind the light of the sun, the spirit of the Gayatri Mantra, the ever-renewing source of life and light from which all of life is born, and that all of life returns to after death. The resilient energy that springs up within the blades of grass, blossoms into fragrant flowers, rolls through ocean waves, beats our hearts, is gifted from nature into the breath in our lungs, illuminates and births each cell of the body, repairs the flesh after a cut or injury, pran, prana, life force, Chi, Ki, etc. Regenerating life force energy. This is what we “restore” our connection with in Restorative Yoga practice. It is an opportunity for embodied meditation, and a crucial, regular practice for taking good care of ourselves, mind, body, heart, and soul. In a world of constant effort, doing, and burning up of our vital energy, it is a much-needed practice to nurture our resilience and groundedness. My current restorative classes are held at Studio Satya (not pictured here) or in my private Yoga therapy studio. Some of the most important weeks of my year are spent as a student. This week I had the privilege of returning to Denver to serve as Senior Assistant for Donna Farhi during her Foundations of a Healthy Back intensive. After nearly three decades of teaching yoga, people sometimes ask why I continue to study. The answer is simple: the more I learn, the more I realize how beautifully complex—and beautifully intelligent—the human body is.This week we explored spinal health through anatomy, biomechanics, developmental movement, and the relationships between the feet, pelvis, breath, nervous system, and spine. Rather than chasing perfect alignment, we explored how healthy movement emerges when the body functions as an integrated whole.I return home with new questions, deeper understanding, and renewed inspiration for the people I have the privilege of working with.I’m deeply grateful to Donna, Tiffany Bucknam, our gracious host and studio owner @myevolition , my fellow assistants, and everyone who shared this week of learning together.Always a student.Always learning.Always grateful. by @summergreenlees

A quiet room before it fills with people, questions, movement, and transformation. This week I have the privilege of serving as Senior Assistant for Donna Farhi’s teaching intensive here in Denver.Twenty years ago, studying with Donna transformed the way I understand yoga—not simply as a series of postures, but as a path of listening, repatterning, and remembering the body’s innate intelligence. As we prepared this space yesterday, I found myself reflecting on how grateful I am to still be learning, to still be serving, and to still be discovering new depth in this work after all these years.I’ll be sharing a few reflections from the intensive over the coming days, along with some of the insights that continue to shape my own work in Yoga Renewal, private yoga therapy, Watsu, and retreats.Grateful to still be a student.Grateful to be of service. And I am so grateful for Tiffany, @myevolition, our amazing host for this intensive, and of course to @df_instagr for her continued inspiration, generosity, and support. ❤️🙏#yoga #yogastudent #repatterning #gratitude by @summergreenlees

Note: The speed is sped up to 2x original speed to fit into the reels. This was a very informal, practice play session with a friend who specifically requested lots of underwater time. 😅🌀🙏I'm so happy to have found a good spot and to be getting a little recording of water play time going. 💙🧜‍♀️ by @summergreenlees

Cicada medicineThe song of the cicada is music to my soul.Cicadas live underground, depending on the species, as long as 12 years. They emerge as adults, climbing from the dark, deep earth into the trees, and the heat of the summer sun and air elements become their new home. They vibrate and sing with the voice of their bodies, as a song unique to them, in harmony with the community of their species. There is an unspoken message and meaning, to me, a medicine that I recognize and appreciate, cherish, even, as sacred and a blessing of this season. Transformation, Metamorphosis, Rebirth, and Renewal: this is a topic I am enthralled with and in awe of. I love it that Cicadas transform as adults, which seems to me a hint, or a nod, from nature's wisdom to learn from.Emerging from pressure, depth, darkness, and deep nourishment. From the realm of the roots to the trunk's bridge, they express themselves fully and live the rest of their lives in an entirely new paradigm, shedding the shell of the old life and sharing the vibration of their medicine with the world. May I take this medicine from nature, as an encouragement to nourish myself deeply within the depths of Mother Earth, persevere and digest my experiences, emerge, climb, to shed what I have outgrown, realize my next incarnation within this lifetime, as an adult, expressing myself fully in my new embodiment, be joined in vibrational love and community, and fly with the freedom of self realization, in the warm, bright light of the Summer heat. May we all be encouraged by the song of the Cicada, that there is another chapter unfolding, one that is brighter and more expansive than what we have known or can conceive of before now. Sometimes the darkness can feel all consuming, or like it will last forever; however, within the rich darkness, there is deep sustenance, in which we will rely on during the journey ahead.💜🙏🌎🌱☀️🪾🌳🎶 by @summergreenlees

Ezra's Birthday is on the Summer Solstice, 2012. He is my third and youngest child. When I was pregnant with him, in my late third trimester, I had a dream. This dream was a message that gave me his name and his date of birth. My usual way of choosing my children's names is to wait until after their birth, so I can name them according to what suits them when I meet them on the outside. Neither Felix nor Raven had a name until almost two weeks after their births. In my dream, I was doing yoga near a window.Outside the window, the bright, beautiful light of the sun shone. The sunlight poured into my room, in a bright beam, and shone directly on my round belly. At the same time, sunlight was beaming back into the beam of light. The sunlight was beaming from my baby and also from the sun, into each other. Then, my mouth opened, and a song poured through me, to my surprise and awe.The song was "🎶Ezra baby of light- Ezra baby of light 🎶"Then, as if written in fat, bright white light chalk, on the chalkboard of my mind, the letters were written, slowly and in all capital letters; E Z R A.Then I woke up and told his dad the baby's name is Ezra. Before that dream, I had not thought of that name.Ezra was breech near the end of my third trimester. We would turn him, and he would go breech again; this happened at least 2-3 times.Due to this, my home birth midwife transferred me to an OBGYN and midwife team, Dr. Campaign and Leeane Macpherson, and my care plan changed from a home birth plan to a hospital birth plan. And Induction was recommended; it was all an adjustment for me.Not long after this news, I had this dream. After further processing this dream, I realized that my proposed induction date, June 21st, fell on the summer solstice.I realized that the dream was a reassurance that the induction was ok to do, for Ezra to be born on the solstice. Every birthday is also a "birthing day" for the mother. And if you are a mom, you know what I mean.Every year when the birthday comes around, on a deep level, I relive the birth story. Happy Summer Solstice, and Happy Birthday Ezra! ☀️❤️🎉🎂🎁 by @summergreenlees

These are the books that are constantly in rotation as my home studies support for my work. What are your favorites?I love it that I am constantly intrigued and fascinated by these topics that I get to work with every day. I am so grateful to myself for choosing a profession that demands my continued education and practice. Embodied Anatomy, Hatha Yoga, Healing Modalities, Ancient wisdom, embryology, birth, rebirth, repatterning, aquatic therapies, all of these topics are endlessly fascinating to me. These are pictures of books that I regularly refer to during my 8 week Yoga Therapy Series. I have been offering this series each year, since 2007 when I first learned it during Donna Farhi's Teacher Training in Vancouver, Canada. I recently learned an additional version/evolution of this course from Lisa Peterson, in her "Inspiring Yoga Teacher" Somatic Yoga Instructor program. Lisa has been an assistant with Donna Farhi for 20 years and is also a BMC practitioner and instructor, a clinical Hanna Somatics practitioner and instructor, SomaticYoga Therapist and Instructor. I have a giant binder of her course material, and another giant binder of Donna's teaching manual, both are packed with rich gems, including class plans, anatomy, yoga sutra translations, developmental movement Repatterning and somatic Repatterning principles and information, and shared inquiry pedagogical model resources. I enjoy diving deep and exploring each of these books and binders on a regular basis, there is always so much to learn and new layers of wisdom when revisiting old favorites. Do you have a deep dive topic of interest? Do you have stacks of books? #continuingeducation #wellnessentrepreneur #adhdhyperfocus #austinyogateacher #yogabooks by @summergreenlees
