Want to give your garden a head start on spring? Plant this fall. 🍂🌿

Fall is one of the best times to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials in the Bay Area. While the weather cools down, the soil is still warm enough for roots to grow, giving new plants time to get established before their big season of growth.

By the time spring arrives, they already have a stronger root system in place to support fresh growth, flowers, and fruit. Even better, they’ll have more time to get established before our hot, dry summer weather returns.

The secret to a fuller, more beautiful garden? It’s right under your feet! 👀🌿

Ground covers are the unsung heroes of landscaping! They turn awkward bare spots into lush, beautiful spaces while helping suppress weeds and adding gorgeous texture to your garden.

Whether you’re softening a walkway, filling gaps between stepping stones, or creating a carpet of greenery, the right ground cover can completely transform your space.

🌱 Pro tip: Snap a photo of your bare spot and bring it in! Our nursery associates can help you find the perfect ground cover for your space. by @summerwindsca

Beautiful gardens don’t have to be thirsty gardens! 🌿🌸

Australian and South African natives are a great match for our Bay Area climate, bringing unique flowers, beautiful foliage, and plenty of personality to low water landscapes.

Some of our favorites include Grevillea, Protea, Cape Mallow, Westringia, Kangaroo Paw, Correa, and Bottlebrush! Many are also wonderful for attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Pair them with California natives for a colorful, water-wise garden that can thrive through our dry summers once established. by @summerwindsca

Looking for a flowering evergreen that stays compact? 💜

Sweet Pea Shrub, or Polygala fruticosa, is a great choice for smaller garden spaces and large containers. Plus, it makes a colorful impact with it’s abundant blooms.

Care:
☀️ Light: Full sun to part sun
🍄‍🟫 Soil: Rich, well draining soil
💧 Water: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, you can reduce the frequency.
🪴 Containers: Use a pot with good drainage and check soil moisture regularly
🧑‍🌾 Feeding: Apply a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring
🌳 Size: Compact varieties typically stay around 2 to 3 feet tall and wide by @summerwindsca

A little extra love for our local wildlife this fall! 🐝🐦🍂

October is a great time to add California native plants that support pollinators and birds through the changing seasons.

🌼 For late-season nectar and pollen:
Coyote Brush, California Goldenrod, Native Asters, and California Fuchsia.

🐦 For fall and winter berries:
Coffeeberry and Toyon provide a natural food source for visiting birds.

And the best part? Fall is one of the best times to plant in the Bay Area! Cooler weather and winter rains help new plants establish so they can thrive in the seasons ahead. 🌿
