🦇……sitting it out by @sumobunni

Back in Taiwan with Repsychling: The Mind at the National Tainan Living Art Center, a creative complex where unexpected encounters can lead to new ways of seeing.

In Building 2, two Plexiglas vitrines became the starting point for a new artistic encounter, inspired by Passage, a painting by US-based artist Shari Rubeck, aka Sumo Bunni.

Projected onto the space, Rubeck’s surreal, blue-toned figure enters into dialogue with the vitrines filled with stones. The stones anchor the installation in the physical world, while the luminous projection of Passage, opens onto a landscape of memory, perception, and imagination. Together, the artist’s vision and the found objects transform an overlooked architectural detail into an unexpected encounter.

This is Repsychling: The Mind in action: recognizing potential in what already exists, recontextualizing the overlooked, and transforming the familiar through a shift in perspective.

Sometimes, a new way of seeing begins with what is already there.

A found object. An artist’s vision. A transformed space. by @sumobunni

‘Lifting The Veil’ and here we are….i hope it all implodes

(I have been waiting for this moment since I was tiny; talking to my father as we stared out at the night sky, mulling other worlds, wars, humanity, black holes, the mysteries of the cosmos and technologies). He had a giant computer in our basement - worked for a large biotech company. His main dna analysis project ended up providing us with the most accurate covid testing data *decades later (even though we know it was farce by design). Set up a makeshift office next to a room filled with buttons, panels with miles of multi-colored wires, one DOS monitor and pretended to be an executive assistant (complete with phones designed of wooden blocks - managing all variety of discarded ‘mail’ and a busy bulletin board).

From my long standing series, New Beginnings which began almost two decades ago, a study of communication. I wrote this as smart phones and iclouds were emerging mainstream. And when I referred to ‘face’ I was speaking about the loss of physical (face to face) connection to one another.

COMMUNICATION
The future of ‘Us’....

‘This continuous body of work is titled ‘New Beginnings’. It deals with the future direction of ‘Us’. We are connected, becoming one. But I envision a divide in our human race; some link in to a technological world so extreme while others choose, or are forced, to hide within what little nature remains.

Connectivity is strong in a shrinking world. Face is over-rated. Unwavering drive pushes us forward, leaving paths of terabytes in our wake. Chip implants are inserted. Evolution releases the thumb from its hand. Plugged in, a new race is in progress. Some hold onto the organic, while many submit to the machine.’

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Shari Weschler

In 2020, the world changed and Shari changed with it. As daily routines fell away and uncertainty took over, she turned to painting as a way to stay grounded, and her studio became a space for release.

Shari’s work captures the chaos of that time and the quiet strength it took to keep going. As a mother and artist navigating a global crisis, Shari created figures that are both strange and very familiar.
