Ocean people - a few months ago I met Arai-san on the beach south of home.

He told me he was 82… or maybe 84 — he laughed when he said it. I photographed him in the water and on land, and posted a few images of him then. I’m heading back to that location today, I wanted to find one frame that felt like him to do as a portrait shot.

He doesn’t dive the same spots all year. He rotates his locations to protect the ocean, so when he returns there is still life to gather.

Each morning he rides his bicycle to the sea, free dives all day for octopus and shellfish, then cycles to the port to sell his catch.

He’s done this his entire life.
He doesn’t remember when he started.

Still diving.
Still working.
Still in love with the sea.

An absolute inspiration.

Pretty happy to see this image of @eishin_november selected as a semifinalist and through to the finals of the @theillumeawards for @redbull photography.

Shot on a Fujifilm X-T2, with the old girl tucked inside an @aquatech_imagingsolutions housing.

Really happy to see the image get this far. Fingers crossed for the final result 🤞
