🧠A squary tip for squaring numbers near 100 ⚡️

e.g. 96² 

✨How far is it from 100? It’s 4 LESS
✨We do 96-4. This gives us the first part of our answer: 92
✨We do 4². This gives us the second part of our answer: 16

96²=9216 🤯

e.g. 105² 

✨How far is it from 100? It’s 5 MORE
✨We do 105+5. This gives us the first part of our answer: 110
✨We do 5². This gives us the second part of our answer: 25

105²=11025 🤓

⛔️ We always need a 2 digit answer from the second part, so if we get a 1 digit answer in the last step, add a 0 in front of it.

For more maths Easter eggs, I highly recommend Simon Singh’s book, “The Simpsons and Their Mathematic Secrets”. It’s a super fun read, even the advanced maths is delivered in an accessible way, and it’s full of increasingly sophisticated maths jokes, because what better way is there to test your knowledge than seeing if you get the high-level banter? 😂

Another fascinating thing…

English is not the only language where the pattern changes in the middle of the teens, and in fact, different languages make the change at different numbers:

English, German and Dutch make the switch at 13 with the suffixes -teen, -zehn, and -tiende.

Spanish makes the switch at 16 with the dieci- prefix, Italian at 17 with dicia-, French also at 17 with dix-.

And then some languages, like Mandarin, Japanese, Polish, and modern Welsh, keep the same pattern throughout, which may actually have advantages for kids learning to count… but that’s a story for another day 🥰.

Mirror numbers might not come up a lot, but when they do, it’s so much fun to use this technique 😁

First of all, we need the digits in the two numbers to be the reverse of each other, like 73-37 or 91-19.

Then we find the difference between the digits and multiply that by 9:

73-37

✨7-3=4

✨4x9=36

So 73-37=36

Let’s blow away those weekend cobwebs 😂😴

‼️DON’T FORGET: First we have to check if the number’s even, I know this caught a few of you out the last time we practised this! 😁

If a number divides evenly by 6, then it must also divide evenly by 2 and 3, since 6=2x3.

This means that we can check whether a number is divisible by 6 simply by checking if it’s divisible by 2 and 3.

✨It has to be even, since only even numbers are divisible by 2

✨If we add its digits (and keep adding until we get a single digit) that digit has to be 3, 6, or 9. This is a characteristic of all multiples of 3. We could also stop if we get to a number that we know is a multiple of 3.

📍e.g. 42

✨It’s even ✅

✨4+2=6 ✅

So 42 is divisible by 6 

📍e.g. 684

✨It’s even ✅

✨6+8+4=18. (Could stop here if we know 18 is divisible by 3). Add again. 1+8=9 ✅

So 684 is divisible by 6

Sorry it’s late 😬⚽️…

When should I use halving and doubling? 🧐

The halving and doubling technique will always ‘work’, but it won’t always make things easier. It’s most useful if one of our numbers is 5 or 50 or a number ending in 5, because those will double to give a friendly number for multiplication, like 10 or 100 or a number ending in 0.

How do I know which one to halve and which one to double? 🤨

We’re on the lookout for HCCMs (highly cooperative candidates for multiplication). So if you can halve or double one of the numbers to get a 10 or a 100 etc, do it!

What about the odds?? 😡

Halving an odd number will give us a decimal, but if we’re good with that, it can still be useful:

e.g. 19x5

Halving 19 is the slightly tricky part, but we can just halve the number below (18) and stick a .5 on the end. So half of 19 is 9.5. 

Now it’s plain sailing, 9.5x10 is 95.

If you want to disturb yourself further with some even bigger numbers, I recommend (sort of 🥴) Tim Urban’s article on Wait But Why: “From 1,000,000 to Graham’s Number”. Be warned, Graham’s Number is a little 🤢 but sometimes, reflecting on these ginormous numbers and the concept of infinity can put our own lives into perspective. And that’s worth doing… at 4pm on some idle Tuesday. 

PS. See also “The Sand Reckoner”, a 3rd century BC study by Greek mathematician Archimedes, in which he attempts to calculate the number of grains of sand it would take to fill the universe. He had to not only estimate the size of the universe, using the information they had available at the time, but he also had to invent a naming convention for the mindblowingly large numbers needed. He came up with an answer of 10⁶³, which might look pretty close but is nowhere near 🫠.

PPS. I notice that the naming rights for 10³¹⁴ is still up for grabs…
