Here is a sneak peek of my upcoming live performance of “Berde” (Leave Me Alone) in Sorani, composed by the legendary master Hassan Zirak. His stirring words—

“Life has become poison for me.
Come and see me,
O you who only disbelieved in me, look, I’m dying.”

—resonate deeply with the pain of unrequited love. I can’t wait for you to experience this heartfelt rendition on YouTube next week. Stay tuned and let the legacy of Hassan Zirak’s music move you as much as it moves me!

🥀HEREDIYA – [“Broken-hearted”]
The latest piece in my live performance series is a Zazakî folk song from the Erzincan region. This song is told from the perspective of a woman left behind, as her husband departs for Germany in search of a better life.

Erzincan is a region from which many Alevi Kurdish men migrated to Germany years ago. Some never returned; others built new lives there and remarried.

This song takes shape through the longing and heartbreak of the woman left behind, who laments:

“Why did he go so far away,
The one I adore with all my heart?
If it were Erzincan, I’d go and bring him back,
If it were Istanbul, I’d go and see him,
But Germany is too far, Germany is too far...”

“Kalimera, Kurdos!” ☀️
(That’s how the lady at the café next to my hotel greeted me every morning)

179 years ago, the Kurdish prince Bedirxan Bey was exiled to Crete and later invited to Chania by the British Consulate to mediate between the Muslim and Christian communities. Walking through the streets of Splantzia with Ahmet Kardam’s ‘Bedirhan Bey: Years of Exile’ in my hands, I thought about the years he spent in Crete. 179 years later, I walked the same streets and drank coffee there.

In Chania, the bell tower and minaret of St Nicholas share the same sky; Etz Hayyim carries the memory of the Jewish community; Venetian walls stand alongside traces of the Ottoman past… And at Terra Verde, a solidarity collective, I drank Zapatista coffee from Chiapas.

And, of course, music. One evening, while listening to rebetiko, I happened to meet Dan Engman and his wife. Dan taught folk and world music in Sweden for many years and knew Kurdish musicians well. Our conversation ended with an invitation to a world music festival in Sweden. Small world. :)

Another day, I met rebetiko musicians, and somewhere between songs and conversations, we came up with our shared slogan: “Same dert, same sevda, same music.” 🪕

HELÎM
A short clip from our concert at the @theoldchurchn16 last April.

The piece tells the story of Halim Dener, a 16-year-old Kurdish boy from Bingol who arrived in Germany seeking asylum in May 1994.

Just a month later, Halim was shot dead from behind by a German police officer in Hanover while putting up flags and posters.

Lyrics:
“The flag is in my hand; its weight is on your shoulders.
The Nazis are cruel, the night is dark.
They shot me.”

1 Eylül — Dünya Barış Günü 🕊️
2012 yılında Londra SOAS Üniversitesi’nde Yol TV’ye verdiğim bir söyleşiden… 14 yıl sonra hala müziğin hafızayı taşıma, hikayelerimizi anlatma ve küçük de olsa toplumsal barışa katkıda bulunma gücüne inanıyorum.

1ê Îlonê — Roja Aştiyê ya Cîhanê 🕊️
Ji hevpeyvînekê ku min di sala 2012an de li Zanîngeha SOASê ya Londonê ji Yol TV re dabû… Piştî 14 salan, ez hîn jî baweriya xwe bi hêza muzîkê tînim ku bîranînan hilgire, çîrokên me vebêje, û her çend piçûk be jî, beşdarî aştiya civakî bibe.

1 September — World Peace Day 🕊️
From an interview I gave to Yol TV at SOAS University of London in 2012… Fourteen years later, I still believe in the power of music to carry memory, tell our stories and contribute, however modestly, to peace. taken in SOAS University of London by @suna.alan

EZ DAYIK IM / I AM A MOTHER
I wrote this song nearly 15 years ago for my aunt, Filiz Tekin, who lost her life for freedom and still has no grave, and for all those brave ones whose lives and stories deserve to be remembered.

Today, as we speak of peace, I return to this song in the spirit of remembrance, dignity and our shared humanity without forgetting the past, and with hope that no new wounds are created. by @suna.alan

👧🏼 I was this little blonde girl in the village.
So much has changed since then. Places, cities, countries. But my language, my memories and the stories I grew up with have stayed with me.

Maybe that’s the quiet confidence that comes with knowing where you come from. 🤍 by @suna.alan
