WHAT YOU SEE, WHAT IT TOOK. At @nightdreamer.music a deep knowledge of reel-to-reel recording has evolved into TWINN, a project rooted in craft, patience and the very physical act of making.

At its height from the 1950s through the 1970s, reel-to-reel was a defining format of professional recording and high-fidelity listening, prized for the quality of analogue tape. Through TWINN, Night Dreamer has secured access to a remarkable selection of original masters, including 'Pieces of a Man' by Gil Scott-Heron, bringing them back into circulation for a new audience.

An hour-long album takes an hour to duplicate. The making of the object moves at the same pace as the music itself.

We visited founder Neal Birnie at Hackney Downs Studios, where 1970s recording technology sits at the centre of a process refined through years of hands-on work with the format. We spoke about the resurgence of reel-to-reel, the development of TWINN and what it means to understand a format through making.

Was lucky enough to get our hands on the original master tapes for one of my favourite albums of all time – Gil Scott-Heron’s Pieces of a Man.

Huge thanks to Ace and Flying Dutchman for trusting us with these precious tapes!

This is about getting as close as possible to hearing the album the way it would have been heard in the studio back in 1971!

It’s now available as part of our TWINN reel-to-reel series over @nightdreamer.music

We’re going to put on a few informal listening sessions over the next few weeks if anyone fancies hearing these tapes. Just drop us a message. by @suncut___

Big shout to @gab.bramb for the advice and wizardry on the packaging, and @tttremaine for collaborating on the visual direction.

Love to @brisa_chander , Alex, @cherrie_flava , @cecileevon @madsimple @anton.spice for listening to me talk about this for far longer than anyone reasonably should have.
