The Painted Stork is a patient and highly specialized feeder, perfectly adapted to life in shallow wetlands. Unlike many waterbirds that rely primarily on sharp eyesight, the Painted Stork depends largely on touch while hunting. It wades slowly through knee-deep water with its long, slightly open bill submerged. Moving its head from side to side in a steady sweeping motion, it searches for prey by feeling rather than seeing.

The inner edges of its bill are extremely sensitive. The moment it detects movement—usually a fish brushing against it—the bill snaps shut with remarkable speed and precision. This reflex action is so quick that the prey has little chance to escape. Small fish form the major part of its diet, though it also consumes frogs, crustaceans, and other aquatic organisms.

Painted Storks often feed in groups, walking in loose semicircles. This coordinated movement helps drive fish into shallower areas, increasing their hunting success. They are most active during the cooler hours of early morning and late afternoon, when prey is easier to catch.

During the dry season, as water levels recede and fish become concentrated in shrinking pools, feeding becomes even more efficient. This seasonal abundance plays a crucial role in supporting their energy needs, especially during the breeding period.

Graceful in appearance yet highly efficient in action, the Painted Stork’s fishing behavior is a fine example of adaptation and survival in wetland ecosystems. Outskirts of Kota, Rajasthan, India, February 26 by @sunilsinghalkota
