🦋🦋 I got this tattoo in April of this year

April 2021 marked 5 years since I got out of an abusive relationship. I got the tattoo as a reminder of how good it feels to be free.
It has taken me a few months to post this because opening up about abuse can be hard. Nevertheless, I wanted to share my story in hopes that other people that have or are currently going through what I went through know that they are not alone. The shame is never on you.

I was in an emotionally abusive relationship for almost 3 years and it took every fiber of my being to break free from it and that’s why I feel like every year of being free should be celebrated.

Emotional abuse can be subtle and sometimes difficult to identify, especially if it’s been gradually building over months or even years and is slowly breaking you. And before you know it, you have become more broken than you ever thought possible. It even took me a couple of years after leaving the relationship to admit to myself that it had been abusive not just toxic. I’ve worked hard on my healing and I’m finally ready to open up about the abuse 5 years later with help from @Drekaslod2020, an organization that provides support to survivors of abuse.
