I remember Matthew Shepard's death. My mom had recently come out, my brother had just died, and every painful emotion sat unsettled under fleshy wounds.

With a psyche so consumed by fear, my eyes were searching for hate personified anytime we left our home. Would we be attacked? Would someone hurt us? Maybe someone would burn our house down while we slept inside (keep quiet, keep quiet, keep quiet).

My mama. Loving and kind, and without hesitation, helped the least of our brothers every time she heard a call. What would have happened if someone hurt my mom? Would anyone care?

Our landlord placed a "Yes on Prop 22" sign below my bedroom window. Every night, I heard it spew, "You're a disgrace. I will hurt you." Forced shame and acts of intimidation by leaders of my community left my lungs working too hard for air (hide, hide, hide).

We had a church on every corner of our city. Did I misunderstand? "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (unless, unless, unless).

The land of the free and home of the brave. Red, white, and blue-filled hate dancing gracefully from my neighbor's awning, it's pride mocking us.

With extreme hesitation, I allowed very few friends into my head or my home. They would ask why I didn't tell them my mom was gay, but no one asked me how they could be a better safe space. I should have asked. I needed more.

My pain and fear have morphed into something untameable. I will always demand of myself to remember feeling shamed, hated, and forced to hide—my fuel for ferocious advocacy and radically accepting those unwillingly labeled lesser. I will listen. I will make, in human form and metaphorically, safe spaces. No one in my atmosphere will bear their burden alone.
