BAM, the annual Old-Brooklyn-based backyard art market celebrating vendors and artisans in all mediums and crafts thrown by @sunparlorstudio, is here again and that means there’s another comedy show in the garage in the backyard. It’s free. My friends and I will tell you jokes after you shop. What a way to spend the whole day and evening. I used to live in this garage, so I can show you where the bathroom is if you need to use it. There will also be surprises. 🤩🔫💪🦄.

Since it’s a house, you gotta RSVP for the address. Link in bio! xoxoxoxo more like hahahaha by @sunparlorstudio

5 mindset shifts that change the game for beginner throwers! (These are just tips my tips as someone who has been teaching beginner wheel throwers for over 5 years!)

1. The key to centering is bulldozing straight forward. (Coning is overrated.)
Repeat after me: push forward and push down. Push forward and push down. Push forward and push down. That is all centering is.
When I was taught wheel throwing I was taught to center by coning only. Coning only works if you understand fundamentally that you are pushing forward with one hand, which is your centering hand, while your other hand applies a counter pressure from the opposite side. Once you have a centered cone, you have to push it down centered. Easier said than done! Beginners tend to lose a lot of clay in the process of coning up and down repeatedly, and I find that bulldozing forward while pushing down makes it click better.

2. Centering is never over. Yes, we refer to the first part of the throwing process as “centering” but at any point, you can apply pressure in an uneven way or make a sudden movement that knocks the piece off-center. Centering is all about radial symmetry. Just because you started with a centered puck doesn’t mean the piece will be centered at the end, sadly!

3. Aim for a cylinder. If you shoot for a cylinder from the beginning, you’ll likely end up with a bowl. If you shoot for a bowl, you’ll probably end up with a flop.
Clay tends to want to get wider and wider on the wheel. It’s much easier to turn a cylinder into a bowl with a wider rim in your last couple pulls, vs. trying to force a bowl with a wide rim back into a narrow collared vase.
Keep in mind, a cylinder can be any dimensions you want. The only requirement is straight sides, 90° angles to the base. This is the strongest shape you can throw on the wheel, so get good at them! Cylinders are fundamental.

4. The key to raising walls is to never move your hands faster than your wheel speed. Wherever you apply pressure on the clay, let the wheel spin 360° before you move up from that spot. Your throwing rings should be horizontal, not diagonal. Otherwise, the clay will become wonky and uncentered.
