Basketball was the dream. Charlotte was part of my journey that made me who I am.

I came from a small town of 500 people with a dream bigger than anything I’d ever known. I didn’t know where it would take me. I just wanted to see how far I could go.

Eventually, that dream took me to Los Angeles.

And even though the journey didn’t end the way I once imagined, I don’t regret chasing it.

Because maybe it was never just about making it to the NBA. Maybe I needed to find out what I was made of along the way.

16 years ago. This time of year always weighs on me. The memories of Zahra Baker’s disappearance, the search, and the horrifying outcome.

May 2010, I met Zahra at Charlotte Motor Speedway and interviewed her about getting a free hearing aid from @starkeyhearing and @scc_nc

I’d fought to cover that hearing aid event because my mom suffered severe hearing loss and so did one of my partners who had a cochlear ear implant. Hearing loss affected my life many times and I saw first-hand how it often leads to shame, depression, and social isolation in many people who experience hearing loss.

A Starkey rep told me I should interview the little Australian girl who lost her leg to cancer and when kids made fun of her. She was from Hickory, we didn’t even cover that area and I’d never been there, but I interviewed her and her stepmother anyway.

Five months later, an AMBER Alert in The Charlotte Observer caught my attention, the name was so familiar. I searched it on my station’s website and it was Zahra Baker. I contacted @called2connect immediately and told her to run my interview from May. I cried all day that Sunday and posted my news story on every Facebook page I could.

I’d cover the search, the discovery, the plea agreement with @randomsoleil and others. I helped organize her birthday vigil but wasn’t permitted to speak. The man who would become my future business partner put me on Nancy Grace. I cried a lot. And in 2021, HLN profiled her story.

Zahra fell through the system. So many teachers knew she was abused her family moved her from school to school eventually things she was homeschooled.

Her body was dismembered by her stepmother Elisa Baker, the woman I interviewed at the hearing aid event. There’s now a law in North Carolina, named for Zahra making that a crime.

My life is forever changed by Zahra Baker and there’s so much to her story still for me to tell because the system is still broken.

Andrew Moxley talks about how he used to study the greats of basketball, and where his old school training techniques came from. Inspired by the great Muggsy Bogues & Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland, one grueling drill was to run two miles while carrying bricks. Moxley shows that he was willing to do whatever it took to become a better basketball player, and that studying those before him was an important part of the process.

Custom high heels designed for She Dreams In Color Live! by Charlotte artist and friend Santos @ajsjunior after years of knowing I would wear his designs one day.

Aguinaldo Santos is a Brazilian-born, multi-talented artist, architect, and fabricator.

I first interviewed Aguinaldo (and May) for the 2023 Charlotte Shout @cltshout podcast when he first launched his ShoutOke interactive mobile karaoke installation Uptown.

His art, creativity, and constantly evolving vision for what he can build and design is so special and I’m grateful to be able to wear his work.

The shoes were the FINAL piece of the entire production as I picked them up on the way to the show the morning of the shoot and this video wa the first I’d seen them. I had not even tried the shoes on prior. It was all divine.

When I launched She Dreams In color interview series in 2021 I intentionally incorporated commissioned artwork from Charlotte artists because
Art is healing.
Art is uplifting.
Art is political.
Art is unifying.
Art is storytelling.
Art creates jobs.
Art builds bridges.
Art makes us happy.
Art matters.
And we are all a Work of Art.

Please support @ajsjunior and look for the bigger and better concept he has across Charlotte and at Charlotte Shout.
