Kwansen belongs to Adane’s In My Family House series, which takes its forms from the large household vessels that were central to domestic life in traditional Akan homes.

The name Kwansen translates as “soup pot,” reflected in its broad, low form, deep interior well and twin handles at the rim. Vessels of this kind were used for communal serving and placed at the centre of the table. by @sunstoriesco

Ghanaian ceramicist David Obeng Adane (@david.o.adane) discusses the origins of his practice in this short film by @joewackle for Sun Stories.

Adane, who trained in ceramics at @knust.gh and leads the studio’s ceramic practice from Accra, traces his work back to a childhood surrounded by artistry: a father who designed letters and signatures in calligraphy, and a mother who sewed.

He speaks candidly about living with a stammer, and how the fluency that can escape him in speech comes instead through the meditative practice of carving into clay. He does not draw his patterns in advance, shaping and carving each vessel freehand and mapping the designs from memory alone.

The carvings are not decorative. Adane composes the symbols into a vocabulary of meaning across the surface, using them to describe human connection, societal structures and interdependency.

Introducing DAVID OBENG ADANE

Carved stoneware that passes for aged timber. Sun Stories is now representing Ghanaian ceramic artist David Obeng Adane (@david.o.adane).

Adane trained at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, receiving a BA in Industrial Art (Ceramics) in 2014, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Education, Winneba, in 2021. In 2024 the Kaabo Clay Collective (@kaaboclay) recognised his practice with its annual Kaabo Clay Award for Black Ceramicists. Now working in Accra, Adane belongs to the post-2010 generation of KNUST-trained ceramicists who continue to push Ghana’s studio practice toward sculptural ground.

Working primarily in earthenware and stoneware, Adane builds on the traditional storage pot forms that have anchored Akan domestic life for generations. Every surface is carved freehand and mapped from memory alone: geometric bands and Adinkra symbols, each tied to a proverb, composed into stories across the body of the vessel. The patterns sit somewhere between ornament and language. The patina is built up in layers until the clay takes on the colour and wear of aged wood.

The results, he says, are cultural documents: a meeting point between inherited knowledge and contemporary form in which each mark carries intention.

Some forms keep returning. Storage vessels, simple and necessary, have appeared across cultures for centuries without much variation.

Onua: Material as method

Each is a wild clay, dug from a different regional deposit and lab tested to understand the mineral and oxide content that shapes how it fires. From there, the body is reworked in studio with organic materials, oxides and mineral stains, in percentages calibrated to its own chemistry

The colourways are the outcome. Anthill, Riverbank, Sea Sand, Soil and Sahel, each named for the ground it comes from, the last echoing the terracotta of the makers we work alongside.

We keep the forms simple. The material is the method
