Hi, I’m Sunyo(Insun) Choi, a Korean picture book author and illustrator based in Seoul. I create poetic, whimsical stories inspired by nature, childhood memories, and the quiet emotions we carry with us.

My debut picture book, The Treewoman, was published in Korea this year. I’d love to create more picture books filled with warmth, imagination, and a little bit of wonder. 🌙🌱

올해 봄에 미국 에이전시와 계약을 해서 소속작가로 활동 하게 되었는데 5월 출간한 나무여자 준비로 정신이 없어 이제서야 올리게 되네요. 따뜻하고 좋은 에이전트를 만나 조금씩 또 새로운 작업을 준비하고 있답니다.
오랫만에 포트폴리오를 다듬고 정리하다 보니 감회가 새롭습니다. 더 열심히 해야겠다는 마음이여요.

가느다란 나뭇가지처럼 힘이 없었습니다.

사람들은
마른 나뭇가지처럼 생긴 그 여자를
‘나무 여자’라고 불렀습니다.

나무를 닮은 여자와 그리고 그녀의 화분 이야기.
1년 반의 준비기간을 거쳐 내일 온라인으로 먼저 만나볼수 있어요.
오프라인 서점은 다음주 부터 판매됩니다.
애정 가득담은 내 첫 자식과도 같은 책.
아무쪼록 아이들이 좋아해주었으면 하는 마음입니다.
사람들에게 사랑 받기를

This is a story about a girl and a plant.
They live in a lonely city.

After a year and a half of preparation, my first picture book will finally meet the world online tomorrow.
It will be available in bookstores starting next week.
I’m feeling so excited and nervous at the same time.

Butterflies in my stomach.

Some sketches and thoughts

As someone who loves summer,
I'm a little sad that it has passed by so quickly.

Just when the air started to feel a little cooler,
dry and crisp autumn came.

If summer was a season of lush and dewy green,
autumn is a season of dry and dusty orange.

I'm not really a big fan of autumn,
when everything becomes so dry that even the leaves begin to crumble.

But whenever it comes around,
I always want to go into literature again.

It feels like the perfect season to read and write,
and to start drawing again.

It's been a few months since I started reading e-books because I could no longer keep stacking books in my small space.

Then I came across a book with such beautiful writing.
It has given me the strength and inspired me to read and think more,
and quietly bring those thoughts back into the world again.

여름을 사랑하는 나로써는 여름이 이렇게 빨리 지나감이 슬프다.
공기가 조금 서늘해지는가 싶더니 건조하고 퍼석한 가을이 다가왔다.
여름이 촉촉했던 푸름의 계절이었다면 가을은 퍽퍽한 주홍빛의 계절이다.
잎이 바스라질 정도로 건조해지는 가을을 나는 별로 좋아 하지 않는다.

하지만 이 계절이 돌아올때면, 늘 문학으로 다시 들어가고 싶다는 마음이 든다.
책을 읽고 글을 쓰고 다시 그림그리기엔 아주 적합한 계절이다.

더이상 좁은 공간 책을 쌓아둘수 없어 이북을 읽기 시작한지 몇 개월째,
문장력이 아주 좋은 책을 만났다. 그래서 기쁘다.
더 많이 읽고 생각하고 그걸 다시 차분히 밖으로 꺼내는 작업을 할 힘과 영감이 생기는거 같다.

#나무여자

처음엔 내 첫 그림책에 애착이 컸기에 독자분들께 재밋는 의미있는 이벤트를 하면 좋을것 같아 가벼운 마음으로 제안했던 아이디어였다.
출판사 측에서 베스트 리뷰어를 선정해 내가 직접 그림을 그려드리기로 했고 그 덕분에 생각보다 더 멋진 도서 리뷰들을 보게 되었다. 읽는 내내 뭉클한 마음이 들었더랬다.
그래, 나는 내가 쓰고 그린 걸로 사람들과 소통을 하고 싶었던 거였어. 하는 생각이 또 들며 힘이 불끈 솟았다.
베스트 리뷰어로 선정된 분들을 위해 그림을 그렸고 이후 엽서 제작은 출판사에서 맡아 주셨다.
그림에 애정을 쏟느라 생각보다 작업하는데에는 시간이 좀 걸렸지만 그래도 받는 분들을 생각하면 괜스레 또 뿌듯해지는 마음.
선정된 분들의 소중한 피사체를 기쁘게 담아 그려보았다.
다들 그림을 보고 행복하셨기를 바라며 😌💕💌
신경써서 챙겨주신 출판사 담당자님께도 늘 감사하다.

At first, I really wanted to make something meaningful for the first readers of my first picture book, so I suggested a little idea to the publishers.
Later, they suggested that we pick some of the best reviews of the picture book and draw their meaningful creatures, then make postcards for them.

But I felt even more touched and warm when I read the book reviews. Yes, I realized that what I really wanted was to communicate with people through my art and words. So I feel like I should make more things and share them with people.

The publishers made the postcards and sent them to the best reviewers after I sent them the illustrations.

It took longer than I thought, but when I think about the people who received these postcards, I feel warm inside. I hope they feel happy when they see them.

It took a year and a half to create my first picture book. <The treewoman>

I’ve always wanted to make a video showing my creative process, but I don’t think I took enough photos along the way. I’ll definitely take more process photos for the next one.

Time flies. It’s already been two months since my debut picture book was published.

I’ve been busy and haven’t been feeling my best lately, so I haven’t been able to work on my next project or create new artwork, and that has been stressful.

But looking back, I realize I’ve already come a long way. I’m no longer where I used to be, and I’m moving forward.

I think it’s time to check in with myself, become more self-aware, and organize my thoughts before taking the next step.

1년 6개월이 걸렸던 내 첫 그림책 출간 <나무여자>
사실 작업 프로세스를 잘 남겨서 영상으로 편집 해둬야지 생각은 했지만 막상 준비를 할땐 정신이 없어 많이 남기질 못했던거 같다.
그래도 출간한지 두달 정도 되는 이 시점
기록을 다시 차근히 남겨야 겠다는 생각을 했다. 요즘 바쁘고 컨디션도 떨어져 뭐든 손에 잡히질 않아 조금 답답하고 스트레스를 받았다.
내 마음을 좀더 돌아보고 정리할 시간이 필요하다 느낀다.

and the quiet breath of new sprouts,

that spring has arrived.

새싹의 숨소리가 느껴지면
