2026 is off to a wild start. On January 19 I almost died in a ski accident. The ASMC crew and I were hosting a progression session event in the Groove terrain park at Heavenly Mountain and filming for a movie to premier next Fall. The day started with me on the first chair bringing prizes, camera equipment and an extra pair of skis. I tested the speed for the jumps and took one straight to my head to start the day. Should have stopped skiing right there. Go big, but know when to go home. I had a helmet on, but was dinged up pretty nice. My game was off kilter for the rest of the day. More shots to the head followed. Fast forward to after lunch, equilibrium out of whack and a half-hearted attempt to spin multiple times ended with me taking the handle of the ski pole directly to my spleen. It knocked the wind out of me in front of my wife, daughter and a handful of friends. Feeling tired, embarrassed, and bummed out I skied to the terrain park shack and sat down. Surrounded by loved ones checking on me, I took too long to reach out for help getting off the mountain and it almost cost me. Going into shock on the chairlift, then the tram and at home was a strange experience. I arrived to the ER just as my heart stopped and pulse finally ceased due to blood Ioss. Thank you to my friend Lisa who was working in the ER that day. 🩷. A transfusion, a CAT Scan, a surgery to remove my spleen and a killer scar down the middle of the abs and here we are today. The recovery saw the South Lake community rally behind me in a way usually reserved for a funeral. Thank you to the world-class surgeons, nurses, so many students, friends and family who came to visit me in the icu, who called, texted and continue to encourage and surround me with Love. This photo was taken just over 13 weeks after the accident by @skiheavenly photographer @pollockmedia. It was a fun shoot in the terrain park and I still love sliding on frozen water on two planks of wood. No spleen, no problem. taken in Lake Tahoe, California by @sunzeri

2025 was good to the Sunzeris. Jen loves working with her favorite non profit ministry and I won Best of Tahoe Teacher, Dancing with the Tahoe Stars, and my fantasy football league. Sabby’s soccer team won lots of games and their big CUFA tournament and Ryan made the Varsity Dance team at South Tahoe High. Everyone stayed relatively healthy and I skied a ton. Our Action Sports crew put on a couple rail jam and big air contests which I entered at Heavenly Mountain and we have so many great friends in the industry. Overall we travelled a lot, smiled a lot and played a lot. We love living in South Lake Tahoe and try to never waste a day! Here’s to a New Year and a promise to love ourselves and each other. by @sunzeri

Huge shoutout to @matrlucas for freezing his hands off and chasing me around with a camera and winch through the streets of South Lake Tahoe and up at Heavenly. This one doesn’t exist without you.
Mat and I have been close friends since we were in kindergaten at Tahoe Valley Elementary. These past couple of days felt like being kids again playing in the snow with your best pal.
Winter is finally here, get outside and make some memories!
