SUPER NATURAL
Landscape practice and research between @danieljanmartin and @liammouritz

POSTS STORIES REELS

NEW EVENT / “It looks like a happy character, smiling as the world passes by,” said a friend to @ehdoarchitecture architect Dave Delahunty about this South Fremantle home.

Designed for a sociable, community-minded couple and their two dogs, this coastal house finds its heart in the native front garden where the boundary between private life and street life blurs.

The home reflects Dave’s philosophy of designing environmentally attuned buildings that quietly enhance everyday life.

The garden, designed by @supernatural_landscape_ , completes the project, almost wrapping the house and connecting it deeply to place.

Join us to experience this charming home and garden and hear architect, owners and landscape designer in conversation.

Address supplied with tickets.

Chilly winds and warm crowds at the launch of Rising Tides Binalup in Albany last night.

This future vision was created by Daniel Jan Martin, Liam Mouritz and Sofie Nielsen @uwa_design / @supernatural_landscape_

An accompanying student winter immersive explored seven places within the landscape framework, with UWA landscape architecture students Amity Crappsley-Pope, Ryan Munyard, Mark Patrick Tay, Megan Dease, Avril Stewart, Ruth Mengler and Kenjie Ben.

Thank you to Merningar Barduk Elder Lynette Knapp and daughter Shandell Cummings for the Welcome to Country, for the support of @uwaalbany and Professor Stephen Hopper, and UWA SDVC Professor Tim Colmer for your words last night.

Rising Tides Binalup looks ahead to a future of rising tides with a vision of care and optimism, where the bays, dunes, and waters of Binalup / Middleton Beach–Emu Point connect again and flourish. Students imagined seven places along a reconnected wetland chain and coastal ecosystem.

The vision was inspired by community values and artworks, also exhibited this week, in collaboration with Associate Professor Natasha Pauli and the UWA team of social scientists and coastal engineers. This research project was made possible with funding from @uwaoceans.

Thank you!
To all to the student authors and designers

Wonderful sunny and fresh days in Albany with landscape architecture students for the Rising Tides Binalup winter immersive.

Grateful to the support of @uwaalbany, yarning by the water with Merningar Barduk Elder and Adjunct Research Fellow Lynette Knapp, son Dion Cummings, and UWA Professor of Biodiversity Stephen Hopper. @uwaalbany has been our studio, as students have been drawing seven sites within a framework developed by Liam Mouritz, Daniel Jan Martin and Sofie Nielsen @uwa_design / @supernatural_landscape_

This project will launch as part of the wider Rising Tides Binalup project at an exhibition in Albany later this month, Museum of the Great Southern, from Friday 25 July to Sunday 27 July, 10am–4pm daily. by @supernatural_landscape_

Geo-Soundings of Deep Waters by Super Natural’s @danieljanmartin for @tinshedsgallery.

Geo-Soundings of Deep Waters, 2025
Rendered digital print
1000 × 1000 mm
This work visualises the aquifers of Perth through rendered digital soundings and cartographic representations. These deep waters extend from surface aquifers, to lower confined aquifers, to the deepest aquifer, the Yarragadee. Situated beneath the Swan Coastal Plain, the Yarragadee flows many kilometres deep. It stores approximately 1,000 cubic kilometres of water, equivalent to nearly 2,000 Sydney Harbours or Sydharbs. The groundwater within the aquifer is ancient, with some estimates suggesting it is over 30,000 years old, with temperatures ranging up to 95 degrees Celsius. by @supernatural_landscape_

Vale Richard Weller, Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture @uwa_design

Very sad to hear of the passing of such an influential figure in landscape architecture, here in Perth and around the world.

Richard taught us that landscape can be powerful, provocative, and grand. He showed us that engaging with nature opens far more questions than we’ll ever find answers to.

He had a profound impact on us and a generation of UWA students, who came to see just how exciting and transformative landscape architecture could be.

As we sat down for a Culture of Nature lecture circa 2010, once-impressionable 20-year-olds went through a moment of revelation.

An introduction to a bigger way of thinking.

Your ethos lives on in many.

❤️ Dan and Liam

Urban greening and new housing: together!

Last month the State Government rezoned the once fated Roe 8 and Roe 9 corridor which threatened the Beeliar Wetlands back in 2017. This news was bittersweet as the corridor was rezoned from being a Primary Regional Road into two parts: Regional Park and Urban.

Super Natural and UWA Lecturer in Landscape Architecture Daniel Jan Martin have been developing a plan that demonstrates how, despite the Urban zoning, the community’s long-held vision for a continuous wildlife corridor can still be realised.

Urban greening and new housing are key priorities for our city and Government, but rarely achieved together. Our plan demonstrates both. With a coordinated open space layout alongside best-practice housing typologies, 40% of the corridor is retained as open space, and the remainder accommodates more than twice the number of dwellings of a ‘business as usual’ development. This is a vastly better outcome for nature, liveability, and housing.

At a forum hosted by @cockburnwildlifecorridor, @savebeeliarwetlands and @bradpettittmlc, the community determined that this corridor should not become another broken link.

Advocacy for this urban wildlife corridor will continue in 2025 as the rezoning is applied at the local level in the City of Cockburn, and new options for state government coordination of the site are explored.

Thank you to all the collaborators on this project, converging across teaching, practice and advocacy. @officerwoods and @matt_mdcarchitects for the excellent Hope Street typology. @ericluan_gx and @snmg27 for their work on the design. Thanks to the @uwa_design landscape architecture students of the 2023 Bilya Bidi Wardan studio, your designs have continued to serve as exemplars for landscape potentials across the corridor!

We were excited to place first in the national @healthgovau competition ‘Reimagining where we live’ for the urban brief.

Under the banner ‘LM2A with Super Natural’ this represents a launching moment for @__lm2a and @supernatural_landscape_

Our winning design ‘Scales of care’ imagined a productive relationship between the practice of care and the environment, a positive feedback loop fostered between residents and the world around them.

The competition called for testing of the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care’s critical draft National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines, which are a response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care’s recommendations tabled in 2021.

Thank you to the jury members and lived experience advisors. Congratulations to the other prize winners and commendations.

Team: Elliot Lind, Tara Moore, Tim Mettam (LM2A), Daniel Jan Martin, Liam Mouritz, Alice Ford (Super Natural)
