Vessel presents: JARRAH
November 13th-15th.

“That tree is me and I am that tree.”

JARRAH is a short film told by Noongar Elder Noel Nannup, connecting us all through trees.

The jarrah spreads throughout Noongar Country, from the streets of our city, through the towering trees of the forests and the hills, all the way to the south coast. The jarrah speak to each other, and to us.

Hand-drawn in charcoal and graphite across hundreds of frames, JARRAH draws out connection and care for these magic trees.

Story by Noongar Elder Dr Noel Nannup OAM
Drawn by Clancy Martin
Produced by Dr Daniel Jan Martin

A mind blowing and emotional moment. The visual of scale of loss in our lifetimes is really something.

There are many things you can do to take action.

For the biggest impact, on Saturday December 12, join the Rally for forests. 4pm at Langley Park.
This will be the biggest Rally for forests WA has seen. There are no more chances for Jarrah Country.

Good Trouble and friends letter writing events. The first will be on Wednesday Nov 4. 6pm in Fremantle (venue TBC). Get it in the diary and follow along for more details.

‘End mining in our water catchments’ - Community information night - Tuesday Nov 3Rd. Buffalo Club Freo, 6-8pm
Excellent speakers, including Dr Ann Choong, who will be presenting new research documenting evidence of water contamination, sourced from Alcoas documentation.

On November 15, we welcome you to ‘Jarrah’, presented by Vessel Contemporary -a film by Noel Nannup, Clancy Martin and Daniel Jan Martin

Kate and Dan, on the essential ingredient of our Darling Scarp jarrah forests, bauxite, and the heartening growth of the movement to keep it in that ground (good to know: there’s plenty of other sources). Thanks to Tim Fitzgerald and Dom Pearce for the footage and editing! by @danieljanmartin

The Doctorate has set sail!

Wonder Land
Landscape frameworks for Perth

When I started my PhD, I could never have imagined all of the people, projects and places that would weave into it.

This has been a journey through many maps, many voices and many natures, to arrive at wonder.

Wonder Land asks you to re-see Perth as a city within a wondrous environment. For new ways of planning that are necessary and long overdue. In one of the most continuous and megadiverse places on earth.

This was an active PhD: a small engine room for advocacy, talks, walks and practice. Casting many parallels along the way, from the forests, to @supernatural_landscape_, to full-time Lecturer at @uwa_design

Thank you to my supervisors Geoffrey London, Andrea Gaynor and Nigel Bertram: to your wonderful minds, helping me fuse breadth and clarity. To Kate Hislop, Maria Ignatieva and all the support at UWA. To many collaborators who weave through: Noel Nannup, Sandra Harben, Cass Lynch, Liam Mourtiz, Sofie Nielsen, Adam Bahar, Alice Ford, Rosie Halsmith, and Loren Holmes. To scholarships from the Australian Government and the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities.

To loved ones, family and friends. Especially those who drew close in 2025: Mariela, Janet, Clancy, Hunter, Theo, Kris, Eliza, Angela, Emily, Amy and Adam.

I’ve created this as a book, so please stay tuned – after examination, and after I’ve caught my breath. by @danieljanmartin

Chilly winds and warm crowds at the launch of Rising Tides Binalup in Albany last night.

This future vision was created by Daniel Jan Martin, Liam Mouritz and Sofie Nielsen @uwa_design / @supernatural_landscape_

An accompanying student winter immersive explored seven places within the landscape framework, with UWA landscape architecture students Amity Crappsley-Pope, Ryan Munyard, Mark Patrick Tay, Megan Dease, Avril Stewart, Ruth Mengler and Kenjie Ben.

Thank you to Merningar Barduk Elder Lynette Knapp and daughter Shandell Cummings for the Welcome to Country, for the support of @uwaalbany and Professor Stephen Hopper, and UWA SDVC Professor Tim Colmer for your words last night.

Rising Tides Binalup looks ahead to a future of rising tides with a vision of care and optimism, where the bays, dunes, and waters of Binalup / Middleton Beach–Emu Point connect again and flourish. Students imagined seven places along a reconnected wetland chain and coastal ecosystem.

The vision was inspired by community values and artworks, also exhibited this week, in collaboration with Associate Professor Natasha Pauli and the UWA team of social scientists and coastal engineers. This research project was made possible with funding from @uwaoceans.

Thank you!
To all to the student authors and designers
To wonderful communications design by @andand_studio
To all the participating community members
For the support of @uwaalbany and @cityofalbanyartsandculture

Geo-Soundings of Deep Waters, 2025
Rendered digital print
1000 x 1000 mm
This work visualises the aquifers of Perth through rendered digital soundings and cartographic representations. These deep waters extend from surface aquifers, to lower confined aquifers, to the deepest aquifer, the Yarragadee. Situated beneath the Swan Coastal Plain, the Yarragadee flows many kilometres deep. It stores approximately 1,000 cubic kilometres of water, equivalent to nearly 2,000 Sydney Harbours or Sydharbs. The groundwater within the aquifer is ancient, with some estimates suggesting it is over 30,000 years old, with temperatures ranging up to 95 degrees Celsius. by @danieljanmartin

What If... A future Fremantle embraces the Bilya / Swan River?

KHA @kha.studios with @uwa_design Lecturer in Landscape Architecture Daniel Jan Martin @danieljanmartin and Noongar Elder Sandra Harben, unveiled their vision for Victoria Quay and a future Bilya edge as part of @cityoffremantle What If… exhibition at @ps.artspace last week.

Victoria Quay’s position between river and city presents a unique opportunity for urban regeneration underpinned by landscape. The vision explores the possibilities for a transformative renewal alongside a rewilded and soft river edge, combining habitat and active landscape spaces. Some key moves include:

• Restoring an ecological edge to Victoria Quay.
• Relocating the rail line underground to allow genuine connections between Fremantle and the water.
• Moving the cruise ship terminal west to connect better in with the historical city centre.
• Repurposing the existing terminal building as a public building.

Approximately 60% of the 450,000m2 overall potential development site is proposed to be dedicated to public open space. While providing significant development potential of more than 2,500 apartments.

Thank you to @cityoffremantle for the invitation to participate and many congratulations to the other design teams on many wonderful ideas for a future Fremantle: @simonpendal_architect; @joshbyrneandassociates; @with_architecturestudio; @spaceagency_architects; @a_new_normal_melbourne

The What If... designs are on display at Walyalup Civic Centre until 6 July. The City of Fremantle is currently undertaking consultation on its City Plan, have your say via @cityoffremantle My Say Freo website. by @danieljanmartin

Vale Richard Weller, Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture @uwa_design

Very sad to hear of the passing of such an influential figure in landscape architecture, here in Perth and around the world.

Richard taught us that landscape can be powerful, provocative, and grand. He showed us that engaging with nature opens far more questions than we’ll ever find answers to.

He had a profound impact on us and a generation of UWA students, who came to see just how exciting and transformative landscape architecture could be.

As we sat down for a Culture of Nature lecture circa 2010, once-impressionable 20-year-olds went through a moment of revelation.

An introduction to a bigger way of thinking.

Your ethos lives on in many.

❤️ Dan and Liam

As tides rise, what changes
and what stays the same?

We brought students and community together this week to launch the Rising Tides book and exhibition in Hamilton Hill.

This is a culmination of the 2024 @uwa_design Rising Tides Studio, where students of landscape architecture envision new coastal futures in a changing climate. These were inspired by community values and artworks, also exhibited this week, in collaboration with Associate Professor Natasha Pauli and the UWA team of social scientists and coastal engineers.

Thank you Noongar Elder Sandra Harben for reminding us of our place on the Wardan in your Welcome to Country, and generosity with our students always.

Rising Tides is edited by Daniel Jan Martin, Sofie Nielsen and Kate Driver. With the @uwa_design studio coordinated by Daniel Jan Martin and Rosie Halsmith, with Liam Mouritz, Caine Holdsworth, Sofie Nielsen, Kate Driver and Alice Ford. Along with the wider research team led by Natasha Pauli, with Carmen Elrick-Barr, Abbie Rogers, Arnold van Rooijen, Mike Cuttler and Eloise Biggs.

This research project was made possible with funding from @uwaoceans.
