“Memory, existence, and the traces of life”

This is what I call fate. This story of entangled strings of fate begins back in 2023 when I went for an exchange semester in Dornbirn, which was apparently the biggest town in Vorarlberg, Austria, about 45 minutes from the Swiss border. There was a small art museum called Kunstraum Dornbirn only about a few yards from my accommodation. My friends and I would often go there to hang out. Oh, I remember when we went there and waved sparklers in the dark, cold Christmas Eve. I had only arrived in Dornbirn at the end of August but there was an exhibition there which started a month before. While trying to catch a breath unpacking this new life for the following six months, I barely had any clue of the surroundings, so naturally I had no idea of this exhibition which was going to be the starting point of this string of fate.

I happened to have been at @kunstraumdornbirn one day with my friends when I felt like going inside instead of just taking a stroll around or sitting on one of the benches like I would do any other day. I see the placard outside the entrance to the building, with nobody in sight. Honestly, I didn’t even remember the name of the exhibition or the name of the artist except I recognized the artist’s name was for sure Japanese and it's a contemporary installation art. Another thing I remember is that it was all red, a color significant in my own culture that symbolizes power and auspiciousness. I walked in through the door, to a large room full of windows through which sunlight easily comes in. The room was filled with what seemed to at the time, pipes. Red pipes. Hundreds of those pipes hanging from the ceiling to the floor, intertwined and tangled. Which I now know, as a fan, is her signature. I really enjoy going to museums or exhibitions, especially art museums. During my time in Europe, I traveled quite a bit and wherever I went, I made sure the museums were always on my itinerary. But it was my first time seeing a diferent form of art.
I don’t have many memories from that day but I remember thinking to myself how diferent and cool that was. I left shortly after taking a walk through the piece.

Today is the first day in 1433 in the Bengali calender. Bangla is one of the most beautiful languages. Take this word for example. "রং" means color and "ধনু" means bow. When conjugated together, it literally means "bow of colors" which in English we shorten to "rainbow." Just like the rainbow, we are made of different colors but no one loses their color completely. Our colors just tend to fade away over time until we add more color to revive it.
But what do we do when we run out of colors?

SHE—

Five years ago today, she left her home to pursue her dreams. Five years later, was she successful in doing so? The answer remains uncertain.
Five years ago, she packed two decades of her life into just two suitcases and never looked back. In these five years, she didn’t even get to see her mother’s face five times. Because once she passed through immigration, she knew she had automatically joined the rat race of life.
So, what happened after?
Her whole world came crashing down in just 24 hours. She reached her destination safely—but was she really present there? Her heart, mind, and soul were still 4,000 km away.
The next thing she knew, she was put inside a cage like a zoo animal for two weeks straight. She had no news of the outside world, no clue about this city that she had just set foot in, in the hope of making her dreams come true.
This photo is the first one she took of this city when she was finally free after those horrific two weeks.
Cherry blossoms still hold a significant place in her heart, and each year she patiently waits for this season. It only lasts about two weeks—just like her time in captivity—but every year, around this time; she is humbled by these beautiful pink and white blossoms.
“How privileged am I to witness this beauty of nature with my own eyes?” she thinks.
What had changed in these five years?
She would say only the seasons have changed. The seasons came and went—some were like warm hugs on a cold winter night, and some struck her like thunder on a stormy night. But each season came with a lesson, shaping her into the person she is today.
The 20-year-old version of her wove different dreams than the 25-year-old her. And while some dreams remained just dreams, others she never even imagined became her reality.
What will the next 5 years bring into her life?
