We are ONE MONTH AWAY from our annual Día de los Muertos celebration! šŸ’€šŸ§”šŸ•Æļø

Día de los Muertos is a cherished Mexican tradition that celebrates the lives and memories of those we’ve lost through music, color, love, and remembrance. This year, we’re Recordando los Sonidos del Pasado — remembering the sounds and music that brings our loved ones and memories back to life.

We will have live music, ballet folklórico, mariachi, food trucks, local vendors, face painting, and of course, the heart of the celebration, three community ofrendas honoring family, friends, and pets.

We want YOU to be part of the celebration!

šŸ“ø Submit a photo of a loved one for our community ofrendas.

šŸŽ¶ Submit a song they loved, you shared together, or that reminds you of them. We’ll add it to our community playlist!

Submission form is linked in my bio or scan the QR code.

See you there!

Today, myself and Supervisor Paloma Aguirre (@supervisoraguirre) cohosted the State of the Tijuana River, bringing together elected leaders from across San Diego County and our federal delegation: Reps. Juan Vargas, Scott Peters, Mike Levin, and Sara Jacobs.

The sewage crisis is no longer confined to South San Diego, and it will take every level of government working together to solve it.

Thank you to the elected leaders from the County of San Diego and the cities of Chula Vista, Coronado, Del Mar, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, National City, and San Diego, as well as Assemblymember Darshana Patel for joining us. And a huge thank you to the San Diego Foundation for hosting us. by @supervisoraguirre

The Tijuana River sewage crisis affects our entire region, and addressing it requires all of us working together. Today, Assemblymember David Alvarez and I convened more than 20 elected officials from across San Diego County, representing local, state, and federal government, for the State of the Tijuana River. We shared updates on ongoing efforts, heard from experts, and discussed how to coordinate our response and deliver lasting solutions.

I’m grateful for the leadership and support we saw from attendees representing communities from North County to South County, and while the South Bay does bear the brunt of this crisis, its economic, environmental, and public health impacts reach across our entire region. The County is taking action on everything within our control, but we cannot solve this alone. Now, we must turn our shared commitment as regional leaders into the urgent action our San Diego County residents deserve.

A couple of weeks ago, I met with residents from Shelltown, Southcrest, Mountain View, and Logan Heights for an El Niño preparedness meeting. We discussed the January 2024 floods, which continue to impact many families, and heard concerns about Chollas Creek Canal and future flooding. I promised to return and walk the canal with residents and City and County partners to hear those concerns firsthand.

Yesterday, we fulfilled that promise. We listened to residents, connected neighbors with community partners, and heard ideas from the City of San Diego for future plans to address the area’s needs.

Keeping our communities safe starts with listening to residents and working together on solutions. Thank you to everyone who joined us. I’ll continue working with our partners to help keep our communities safe and prepared.

Ayer, cumplimos esa promesa.

Seguiré trabajando con nuestros colaboradores para mantener a nuestras comunidades seguras y preparadas. taken in Chollas Creek, San Diego by @supervisoraguirre

Housing is the single greatest challenge facing our communities, and people who serve our country, work in our neighborhoods, and keep local businesses running deserve the chance to build a future right here in District 1. I was proud to break ground on the first phase of the Manolo Farmers Market redevelopment in National City, bringing roughly 120 apartments designed primarily for military service members as part of a broader vision to revitalize key corridors, support local businesses, and create a more welcoming neighborhood that serves more of the people who call National City home.

Thank you to Senator Hueso, Councilmember Rodriguez, Councilmember Yamane, the Dallo family, and all the project partners for bringing everyone together to help bring this vision to life.

Every young person deserves a safe place to call home and the support to build a stable future. I spent the evening with Doors of Change and the Youth Assistance Coalition (YAC), sharing a meal with young people and learning more about their efforts to address homelessness among teens and young adults. Through mentorship, safe housing, health care, education, and other essential services, they help young people find stability and new opportunities.

Thank you to YAC, Doors of Change, and their partners for showing up for San Diego’s young people.

As Latinx Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re recognizing four individuals whose work, advocacy and dedication continue to uplift Latinx communities and strengthen the fabric of San Diego County.

Daniela Perez of MANA de San Diego, Emilia Castillo of Platicando Con Mi Gente, Liz Ramírez of Chicano Federation, and Cristina Juarez of Inecui Flower Shop each reflect the strength and spirit of our Latinx community. Through their work, they are paving the way for social mobility and advocating for equity and justice for people across our region.

Latinx Heritage Month has been wonderful, and we will continue to celebrate the culture and uplift our Latinx communities throughout the year.

At our October 7 meeting, the Board approved a joint Board letter I co-authored with Supervisor Anderson to modernize County land-use rules and support sustainable growth in the East County backcountry. During my visit to Jacumba, I saw firsthand the tremendous potential of this beautiful town and heard directly from residents about their vision for its future. Jacumba residents deserve the same attention and investment from their County as anyone in the region, and I’m proud to have partnered with my colleague to help make that happen.
