BEG TO SERVE!!!! this was the best show i’ve ever went to, and not just because my favorite band was the headliner. every band killed it! i’ve never seen the first band to have such a crowd, but from the very beginning Vomit Forth had pits going constantly! i’m still kicking myself for never listening to Angelmaker before, as well as spite! Of course, Dying Fetus was insane, the pit was crazy at all times!
The Black Dahlia Murder was the most impactful act i’ve ever seen. I’ve waited the better part of a year to see them, and yet nothing could’ve prepared me for how floored i was throughout the entire performance. Never before have i felt so touched by a band, and to see them live was too much for me. i was BAWLING at parts, in complete hysterics, pinching myself to make sure i wasn’t dreaming. Brian, Brandon, Ryan, Max, Alan and Trevor, thank you all so much for being a part of my life in such an important way.
even though i went on my own, i felt so supported and together with the hundreds of feinds in the audience, singing with me, helping me crowdsurf, and picking me back up in the pit. SWORN TO BLACK WE’LL ALWAYS BE!

this is a video of me feeding Mabel, my Aphonopelma chalcodes, otherwise known as the arizona blonde tarantula!

i got this baby less than a week ago, and she has already become the majority of my coworker’s favorites.

this specific species is known for its cool, blonde coloration that extends over its entire body, broken up by intermittent dark stripes.

this combined with its calm temperament and tolerance to handling makes it a favorite for many beginner keepers, joining avicularias and brachypelmas as the best rookie tarantulas.

as the common name suggests, this species is endemic to the deserts of the southwestern united states and mexico, making it one of the few commonly kept north american tarantulas.

Mabel took a while to react to the worm, which is common for most tarantulas. the majority of spiders (and arachnids in general) have very poor eyesight and mainly rely on vibrations to understand their environment. for tarantulas, they fill this need with thousands of tiny hairs called settae, which can be used to sense the smallest vibrations around them. Mabel most likely detected the vibrations early on, but took a while to register that it was food.

in this video, i demonstrate the process of removing the molt of one of my tarantulas to determine its sex!

the tarantula seen here is my Pamphobeteus sp. duran, or the duran birdeater tarantula. this spider has not been fully determined to be a separate species from the other described Pamphobeteus species, shown by the “sp. duran” instead of the recognized taxonomy used for individual species.

the Pamphobeteus genus was first described in 1901, and features some of the largest (and in my opinion, prettiest) tarantulas in the world! these species are known for their impressive size (growing over 9 inches in legspan for certain species) and incredible colors, ranging from deep blacks to vibrant purples and pinks, like mine!

this genus is one of the few that exhibits sexual dimorphism past genitals, with the males commonly exhibiting much more stunning and vibrant colors. while the females are mainly darker with light pinks, males under the light can shine with bright purples and pinks, which is helpful for determining sex!

i am confident that mine here, named Lucy, is a male. the combination of his bright colors and no spermathecae indicated on his molt leads me to believe he is male.

as i lift up the coconut in the video, Lucy kicks hairs off of his abdomen as a defense, something the majority of new world tarantulas are capable of. this produces a cloud of fiberglass-like hairs that can lodge into the skin, mouth or eyes.

while there is no direct benefit of removing the molt of a tarantula; especially if it is very defensive of its molt, the shed exoskeletons can be useful for determining the sex of the tarantula, as an education tool, or simply as a keepsake or an artpiece.

Lucy was my second ever tarantula, and i specifically picked him up for his vibrant colors and known reactivity, something common for many species in this genus.

since then, i’ve gained 6 more tarantulas and a variety of other arachnids, totaling 19 pets in total. the nice thing about tarantulas is that they require very little space and maintenance, so they can easily be kept in bulk. #spider #tarantula #arachnology #molt #pamphobeteus #education #exoticpets by @superwaffle6883.3
