It’s that time of year again 🌭🌭🌭
Been doing this gig since 2019 (!) and it never disappoints. Come out to witness a true NYC outer borough bizarro phenomenon, the Nathan’s Coney Island hot dog eating contest.
Joey is back this year? I think? From what I hear… we’ll see, I guess 🇺🇸 taken in Nathan's Famous Hot Dog by @supkevmo

When I graduated from grad school in NYC one of my first “steady” gigs was performing in the subway w/ a bucket/horn band called @drumadics (IYKYK). We played high energy music for 3 hours at a time underground in the subway terminals. The money was pretty good (cash only) in the times before social media and internet connections underground. One of the many great musicians I met through this band was a sax player named Alex Violette. He was a thoughtful, fiery, brilliant musician who I really enjoyed playing with.

One night after playing in the subway I went with Alex to Cleopatra’s Needle on the UWS where he was playing in the house band. That night none other than Wynton Marsalis came by to sit in. I remember being blown away by Alex’ playing that night, hanging with and even “cutting” at times a luminary like Wynton. Eventually Alex and I both moved on from Drumadics and lost touch for many years.

About a decade later I got a call from my old friend Alex. He told me he was now the organist/musical director at a church in Bensonhurst and he needed brass accompaniment for Easter or Christmas services, I can’t remember which holiday it was, and asked if I could get a small brass ensemble together. At the time I didn’t have a steady church gig, so I was more than happy to perform with him.

There’s no other way to put it - Alex had found God, and started a family; I believe he already had 3 kids by this point and had retired from sax playing and was a full time church organist and musical director. He took it very seriously, but was also loose and patient and kind with the brass musicians. We had a great time and did many services together with many of my old friends and colleagues under Alex’ direction. The masses were old school catholic services, many of them in Latin, Spanish, and English. Midnight masses that actually started at midnight, Easter vigils and Holy Week add-ons. Sometimes it would take a while for the church to pay us, but aside from that it was a really nice experience to reconnect with an old friend who had found religion and changed the trajectory of his life in such a fundamental way. Another trip around the sun complete! 43 of them so far, and I’m feeling lucky and grateful for my health, my family, my friends, and my many other blessings in this life. I don’t post very often these days but Me, Maura and Otis are doing well - Otis is growing up so fast.. 14 months old now. He sleeps like a champ (he’s sleeping now as I write this). He’s running around the house and starting to say his first words. “up” is his favorite word so let’s all go 🆙 this year 📈 If you would like to wish me happy birthday in person or buy me a drink please come through to @thejellybk on Monday night 2/3 featuring my friend @bridgetbarkan! Gonna be my unofficial birthday hang and the band is sounding pretty damn good if I don’t say so myself. Oh also go and wish a happy birthday to @__s__t__a__r__r___ we share a birthday and so much else and she’s amazing. Ok that’s all for now bye! ❤️ taken in Brooklyn, New York by @supkevmo
