Last May, Makan Thing and @suppercepatdiadapat did a 3-day dinner service pop-up at @manisandessertclub. It was our first big event together, and we honestly wouldn’t have done it without all of you. You made the time and effort to show up, support us, and be part of the experience. And when I say we’re truly grateful, I really mean it.

Most of you have been here since day one. You’ve watched us grow literally from our tiny little kitchen, and looking back at all the things we’ve done to get here feels a little surreal. To our friends and regulars who have shown up for our past events, time and time again, WE SEE YOU TOO.

It’s crazy to look back at all the work we’ve done and realise we’re here, in this exact moment, doing something we love with people who believe in what we do. So yes, as tacky at it sounds we’re grateful. For this experience, for all of you, and for everyone who wants to see more from us! xx

STILL LIFE STYLING / CURATED CATERING
Concept
A menu inspired by Annie Ernaux’s background and her exploration of desire, longing, and obsession in Simple Passion and The Possession.

Theme
Using familiar French household ingredients and everyday staples, the menu avoids excessive luxury or refinement. Instead, it focuses on simple daily foods prepared with intention and quiet intensity.

Tablescape
Food is presented in repetitive geometric forms and served on stainless steel ware - clean, minimal, practical and reflective. The simplicity of the setting echoes the directness and honesty found in Ernaux’s writing.

Although food or eating are rarely the focus of either book, it often exists in the background as a measure of time. Meals are prepared while waiting, eaten alone between routines, or consumed absentmindedly during periods of longing and uncertainty.

🌀 A DECONSTRUCTED LOOK AT OUR CURATED MENU IN COLLABORATION WITH SCDD FOR THIS SATURDAY’S SESSION 🧈

Taking inspiration from Annie Ernaux’s semi-autobiographical works, “Simple Passion” and “The Possession”, we have photographed a deconstructed menu of what’s to come in our May reading, one that complements the written world of Ernaux’s torrid and sensual real-life world, facilitated into ours through food and discussion.

This month, Aisle One returns in collaboration with Supper Cepat Dia Dapat for an evening centered around an appetite and literary discussion in all its forms — desire, longing, memory, consumption.

For this session, we turn toward Annie Ernaux’s Simple Passion and The Possesion; two works that read less like novels and more like private documentation. Precise, restrained, almost surgical in the way they unravel obsession, intimacy, and the quiet humiliations of wanting.
