“Nothing Even Matters” by Lauryn Hill featuring D’Angelo should’ve been a single with a music video. They sounded so good together, and the song captures that feeling of love beautifully.

Janet’s social commentary can be a bit rudimentary, but “Rhythm Nation” is a banger. The message is clear and the music video is iconic. Great example of a socially conscious record that works as both a protest song and a dance record.

“Together Again (DJ Premier 100 in a 50 Remix)”

That “Ebony Woman” sample by Billy Paul & that trademark DJ Premier sound all over this. 🔥

“Got ’Til It’s Gone (Ummah Jay Dee’s Revenge Mix”

J Dilla flips Janet’s smooth original into a gritty boom-bap cut, driven by dusty drums and a raw bassline.

Roger Troutman — “Do It, Roger”

I love how this song sets you up. It starts off deceptively mellow before the groove kicks in and completely changes the energy

The Meters on “Lady Marmalade” — that groove is something else. The rhythm section is the backbone of the record.

Happy 50th Anniversary to Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life.

At this point, it’s hard to talk about this album without repeating what’s already been said. But the musicianship, songwriting, arrangements, production, and sheer scope of it still amaze me.

What stands out to me is how much ground Stevie covers without the album ever feeling disconnected. Joy, love, family, spirituality, social commentary, pain, celebration—it’s all here.

And somehow, five decades later, it still doesn’t feel dated.

For me, this is the greatest double album ever made. 50 years later, Songs in the Key of Life remains the measuring stick.
