Some people have hobbies. I study cities, places, and spaces.

Venice Biennale, 2017.

I photographed a lot that trip.

Not necessarily the things I was supposed to remember, but the things that held my attention: installations spilling beyond their edges, strange material encounters, rooms that changed how you moved, and moments where it became difficult to tell where architecture ended and art began.

The last video came from another observation from a video at the Venice Biennale in Italy: Michelangelo’s David was everywhere. The original stands in Florence, but its image travels far beyond it. Full-size replicas, miniature statues, fragments, photographs, souvenirs, advertisements. You can encounter the David statue without ever encountering David.

I became interested in what happens when a work of art is reproduced so extensively that it becomes part of the visual language of a place. The body is no longer only a sculpture. It becomes a symbol of Italy, of Florence, of the Renaissance, and eventually something that can be copied, cropped, miniaturised and sold.

Looking back almost ten years later, I’m interested in what survived in the archive. Not everything I saw. Just what I thought was worth stopping for.

From the Surbanist archive: San Nicolás, Valencia, 2018.

Before architecture became something we mostly learned to read through plans, drawings and explanations, buildings were already telling stories.

In churches like Church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir, almost nothing was simply decorative. Colour, figures, light, paintings, sculpture and the position of things within the space carried meaning.

Architecture became part of how religion was communicated. You did not only hear the story. You were placed inside it.

Symbolism made space legible.

Issey Miyake, London, 2022.

I went for the clothes. I photographed the space too.
Looking back, they were doing many of the same things.

Folding. Layering. Exposing structure.
Making something new against what was already there.

I’d been exploring single-surface folding around this time through origami and, in my case, Ori Nuno. Maybe that’s why I noticed it everywhere.

Pools can do more than give you somewhere to swim.

Architects use water to frame views, extend buildings into the landscape, create reflections, define outdoor spaces, play with geometry and change how a place feels.

Ten different ways to think about water outdoors.

A wall doesn’t always have to mean a dark room.
Sometimes the light just needs another way through.

Glass blocks.
Clerestories.
Interior windows.
Small openings in the right places.

That’s the part people forget about walls.

Architecture changed shopping for me.
Walking through Liberty London, I realized i wasn’t just looking at what was being sold.
I was noticing the space around it.
The materials. The scale. The details. The way people move through the store. The things you notice immediately, and the things you only notice once you slow down.

Being an architect has made it almost impossible for me to experience a place without asking why it feels the way it does.

I came to shop. My brain apparently conducted a site visit.

Architecture changed shopping for me.

I don’t just notice what I’m looking at anymore. I notice the decisions behind it.
The materials.
The proportions.
The light.
The details.
The way people move through a space.

Once you start seeing those things, even a trip to the store becomes a lesson in design.

What’s something you notice now that you never used to?

Bigger windows don’t automatically mean better lighting.

Good lighting is about orientation, placement, and control, not just size.
Sometimes, a smaller, well-placed window can do more for a room than a much larger one.

I’m still figuring it out.

Sometimes finding your path means looking at something you’ve done for years and asking, “What if I did this differently?”

I don’t have all the answers yet. I’m still discovering what feels right for me.

But I have no doubt I’m heading somewhere great. And I hope you can believe that about yourself too.

You see the finished space. I see everything it took to get there.

The books. The site visits. The material samples. The endless sourcing. The things that looked right online but weren’t right in person.

This is what designing a space actually looks like before you ever see the final photograph.
