Hard to believe 3 years ago today l completed the Long Walk into Parliament House to support a Yes vote on the Aboriginal Voice to Parliament Referendum with Michael Long, Dave, Jim, Lionel and big bunch of trouble making no good activists. In spite of the outcome l can still hear the words " Alway was, always will be" by @surf_sublime

Everything comes to an end so this will be my last insta surfing post.

I've had a great run putting up posts (a man's gotta have a hobby after retiring) and being here at Snapper has reminded me where it all started. I arrived on the Goldy in 72 with a 6' 2 twin fin and spent 12 months surfing with the likes of MP and his bro, PT, Rabbit, the Nielson Bros and the list goes on. Upon returning Vicco my surfing had improved 10 fold and l was nearly as good as my younger brothers, who were cutting their mustard down at Bells as grommets. Years passed, l built a mud brick house down at Bells and for the past 40 years have made every wave count. Also spent 30 years volunteering with SANE ( Surfers Appreciating the Natural Environment) revegetating Bells for future generations. Surfing has always been a conduit back to nature and my valued connection to others, and it will continue on ( lm even body boarding now) just no more posts.

lm now a 73 yo Salty and the real Salties are always watching out for each other, giving a hoot or holler when someone gets a pearler. Always sharing a wave within skills and limits rather than simply dominating. The vibe can be supportive, competitive and friendly in every session.

What l witnessed today gives me hope, and there were many dads out there giving great support to their kids. It made yesterday's sour experience pale into insignificance. Surfing is in good hands l reckon, keep on gliding kids and long live the Salties. by @surf_sublime

The tale of 2 parents, one yesterday, one today. After arriving at Snapper yesterday, l hired a mal and paddled out into 3 foot pearlers to hear a dad say to his 7 yo girl - after she missed a wave he pushed her into " what the f$%k are you doing ya idiot, f#$k try harder ya kook", she looked depressed . Today l saw a different dad, a caring dad, he arrived at the beach, helped his 7 yo get into a wetty, got her stretching and then pushed her into this little beauty and more. Talk about style and riding it to the end. She came back all smiles and beaming. Go Elkie, go dad. by @surf_sublime

Text taken today from Dr. Tracy Westerman, a proud Nyamal woman from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Well worth the read in light of what happened today and a few ANZAC ceremonies.

Let’s be precise about what Welcome to Country actually is — because the people booing clearly don’t know.

It is not a welcome to Australia.
It is a Traditional Owner welcoming you onto their specific traditional lands -the country in which they have practiced their traditions including the traditional welcome to other clans— the precise land your feet are standing on. Land that was never ceded. Never signed away. Never surrendered.
That welcome was then extended to ALL Australia’s. As an act of grace. An act of reconciliation.
Every time it’s delivered-that’s the reason it’s delivered.

My mother had to apply for citizenship of the land she was born on. Worked for no wages. Our ceremonies were made illegal. Our children were taken. Our people were massacred on this continent — and the historical record is unambiguous on that. Massacres that are still denied. Not taught in schools.
Indeed our own Prime Minister commemorated the Port Arthur anniversary by describing it as “the worst mass shooting in our nation’s history.”

Port Arthur was a tragedy. 35 lives. Devastating.

But our nation’s worst massacre?
- The Pinjarra Massacre, 1834 — soldiers ambushed Bindjareb Noongar men, women and children on the Murray River, here in Western Australia. Up to 80 killed. The town still carries that name.
- The Slaughterhouse Creek Massacre, NSW, 1838 — 300 people killed. Planned to coincide with a ceremony so numbers would be highest.
- The Coniston Massacre, NT, 1928 — over 60 Warlpiri people shot dead, including children.
Within living memory

Historians have documented over 400 massacres of Aboriginal people between 1788 and 1930. Over 10,000 killed. In those records alone.

And Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples still served in every Australian conflict since the Boer War. Over 1,000 in WWI. More than 4,000 in WWII. At least 300 in Vietnam. The Torres Strait Islander men had the highest enlistment rate per capita of any group in Australia during WWII by @surf_sublime

Together as a community of ocean lovers and surfers, we will be gathering and paddling out against the Government's new plans for gas exploration off the Victorian coasts.
Join us at the Front Beach inTorquay this Saturday at 10 am. Come along for a swim or paddle and have your say for the Southern Seas.

The Federal Government has opened approximately 2.5 million hectares of waters offshore Victoria and Tasmania to new gas exploration under the 2025 Otway Basin acreage release. The current release effectively reopens oceans that communities came together to protect just 14 months ago.

This is no longer just about stopping one project; it is about drawing a line, protecting a living ocean, and honouring our responsibility to future generations who deserve a Southern Ocean that is alive, thriving, and free from industrial harm.
