Ever wondered how we achieve those thick, statement stone edges?

Natural stone slabs are typically just 20mm thick, but a mitred edge creates the appearance of something much thicker.

By cutting and joining the stone at a precise angle, the veining can flow seamlessly over the edge, creating the look of one solid piece.

From 40mm to 80mm and beyond, this technique opens up endless design possibilities.

Seen here at the Elite Homes Mountain View residence in Balwyn, the mitred edge gives the Volakas Gold island a more substantial appearance, adding visual weight and presence while allowing the stone’s natural veining to flow beautifully over the edge.

A little colour, a little movement and a whole lot of personality.

Ceppo Sicilia Marble brings its own kind of charm to this kitchen, with layers of sage green, dusty pink and creamy ivory creating a beautiful mix of colour and texture.

Used across the island, benchtops and splashback, the stone sits alongside curved fluted detailing and warm oak joinery. The combination is unexpected yet completely natural, with each element bringing something different to the space.

A big thank you to Rhiannon for creating a space that celebrates the beauty of natural materials and isn’t afraid of a little colour.

The question we hear most at the warehouse is rarely about colour. More often it’s about cost, and why two slabs that look so alike can sit at such different prices. Series 5 of our education series is all about cost and value.

Across this carousel we explain why natural stone prices vary from slab to slab, how stone really compares with engineered alternatives, what goes into the final cost beyond the slab itself, how natural stone adds value to a home, and how to bring it into a tighter budget without compromising the finished result.

Natural stone is never a standardised product. Every slab is an individual piece of the earth, and knowing what shapes its price leads to more considered decisions at every stage of a project. Save this one before your next quote, and if there’s a cost question we haven’t covered, leave it in the comments for a future series.

My favorite design detail in the house has to be this coffee table set, and it almost didn’t happen! 🤫👇
During the kitchen build, we had some beautiful stone and cabinetry material left over. Instead of letting those premium offcuts go to waste, I worked on creating these custom, fluid nesting tables. The soft, rounded silhouettes bring so much warmth to the room.

The Mountain View Residence in Balwyn was designed around one clear idea: a home that works beautifully every day and still feels grand the moment you step through the door.

Leonora from @surfacespectrum and Amit from @elite_homesvictoriagroup are taking us through this newly completed home, where that balance shows in every detail; from the hardwood spiral staircase and parquetry flooring to the picture frame panelling, statement skylight and dedicated wine room.

In the kitchen, Australian-made two-pack cabinetry seamlessly conceals the integrated appliances, while the Volakas Gold we helped Amit select brings warmth and movement with its soft white and golden flowing veining.

This is what we love about working with builders like Elite Homes; every detail is considered, and the stone is chosen to belong in the space.

Thank you, Amit, for having us through and for trusting us with the stone. We’re already looking forward to the next one.

A bathroom transformed through thoughtful design.

Reflecting our clients’ brief to retain the majority of the existing plumbing in this space, the design prioritised spatial planning and architectural detail over structural change. The result is a beautiful bathroom that feels entirely transformed, balancing sculptural impact with everyday functionality.

Material selection plays a pivotal role in elevating the space. Solid brass tapware and fixtures by @astrawalkerofficial create a rich, sophisticated finish, complemented by bespoke marble from @surfacespectrum. A carefully considered combination of natural stone and porcelain tiles from @perinitiles introduces warmth and softness, bringing texture, balance and cohesion to the overall design.

Should you select your natural stone from a sample?

These are both samples of Notre Dame; yet held side by side, they could almost pass for two different stones.

And that’s exactly the point.

Samples are a great starting point. They allow you to take the stone home, see it alongside your joinery, flooring, paint colours and other finishes, and understand its general colour and texture.

But a sample is only a small snapshot of a much larger slab.

Natural stone can vary significantly from slab to slab and even from one end of the same slab to the other. Colour can deepen, veining can become more pronounced, and areas of movement can appear or disappear entirely.

So while a sample can help you decide which stone you love, viewing the full slabs allows you to choose exactly what you’re getting.

That’s why we always recommend using samples as part of the selection process, but making your final decision from the actual slabs.

Visit our warehouse, take samples home, then come back and select the slabs that will become part of your space.

Planning a stone selection? Save this checklist for your appointment. ✔️

A little preparation before you walk through our warehouse doors can make finding the right stone so much easier.

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR STONE SELECTION

1️⃣ Plans + drawings
So we can understand the full scope, layout and scale of your project.

2️⃣ Samples of finishes
Bring along samples of any finishes you’ve already selected or are considering; joinery, paint colours, tapware, tiles, flooring or other materials. We can lay everything against the slabs to see how the colours, tones and textures work together.

3️⃣ An idea of quantities
If you know roughly how many slabs or how much stone your project requires, bring those quantities with you. This helps us check availability and make sure there’s enough of the stone you love.

4️⃣ Inspiration images
Pinterest boards, saved Instagram posts, screenshots or magazine pages are all welcome. They help us understand the overall look and feeling you’re trying to create; even if you don’t know exactly what stone you’re looking for yet.

5️⃣ An open mind
Sometimes the stone you leave loving isn’t the one you came in expecting. Seeing natural stone at full slab scale can completely change the direction of a project.

With everything on the table, we can narrow down the options, compare materials properly and guide you towards a stone that genuinely works for your space.

Save this post for your next stone selection.

Polished, honed or leathered? The finish you choose can completely transform the way a natural stone looks and feels.

In the latest post from our Stone Education series, we break down three of the most popular finishes and what each brings to a space.

A polished finish enhances depth, colour and movement, giving the stone a more reflective, luminous appearance.

A honed finish creates a smooth, matte surface that softens contrast and gives the stone a quieter, more understated feel.

A leathered finish introduces subtle texture, enhancing the natural character and movement of the stone while also being particularly forgiving of fingerprints and everyday marks.

And while the finish doesn’t actually change the colour of the stone, it can dramatically change the way that colour is perceived.

We also answer some of the questions we’re asked most often: Which finish is best for a kitchen benchtop? Is one easier to live with than another? And can the finish be changed once the stone has already been installed?

Swipe through for the full breakdown, and save this one for when it’s time to choose your stone.
