Update 8:00 AM: La Boya de Caricoos en Rincón (41115) marcando 10.2ft @ 11s. El swell del Noroeste entró sólido y las condiciones están sumamente peligrosas.

🚩 BANDERA ROJA en las playas de la costa Oeste y Norte de Puerto Rico. Condiciones NO APTAS para bañistas. El mar seguirá deteriorándose durante el día, ¡por favor, fuera del agua!

Para la comunidad de surfers: Si no eres un surfer experimentado o no conoces bien el área, NO TE METAS. Hay muchísima corriente y el periodo está moviendo mucha agua. Consulta con los locales antes de cualquier cosa.

Poza de las Mujeres in Manatí is one of the most dangerous beaches in Puerto Rico.

Yesterday, two young women tragically lost their lives there. Our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones.

Edit: we have received reports that the tragedy actually occurred about 50 meters east of the rock pictured in this animation, but the phenomenon (and the hazard) is exactly the same: a strong offshore rip leading to a coherent vortex.

This Wavemaps surf-zone current simulation shows why this place can be so dangerous. This is not AI. This is a real physics-based numerical model showing the most likely current patterns in the area for yesterday’s sea state.

Important: the exact position of the vortex and strongest currents can change, but the hazard is real.

While it is impossible to prevent every drowning, we believe that with better technology, stronger public awareness, and open-ocean lifeguard programs across Puerto Rico, we can reduce tragedies like this. taken in Pozo De Las Mujeres, Manati by @surfcamspr

• Wave Height: 5–7+ feet (Head high to overhead).
• Condition: Clean. Maria’s is handling the swell well, offering much more organized lines than the spots further north.
• Wind: Offshore/Glassy. Early morning winds were East (offshore) around 11 mph, turning very light (3-5 mph) by midday. This is keeping the faces smooth.
• Swell: Primary swell is coming from the NNE with a long period of 13 seconds, which means there’s plenty of power behind these waves.
