Join SURJ Marin and MCFL on Sat. Oct. 19 as we close out this Poverty and Racial Justice Series by taking a look at the ways in which voter disenfranchisement can help perpetuate cycles of poverty. We will explore the systems that make it almost impossible for people of color to run for office, to vote in elections and to have their interests represented in local and national government. How does this impact a racial group’s ability to emerge from poverty and to fully experience the rights and benefits of American citizenship? Join us as we discuss this topic with people who have seen these impediments at work in their communities!

Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Marin and MCFL have teamed up to present a series that examines the deep connections between racism and poverty that are encoded in global, national and local economies.

This online event series is generously supported by the Friends of the Marin City Library and SURJ Marin.

Happy Juneteenth! Our accountability partners @mculturearts are hosting Marin City’s biggest celebration yet this coming Saturday, June 22nd. The best way us white folks can honor this momentous holiday is by giving back to the Black community. We invite you to consider how you can provide support this year and every day. Some ideas for offering reparations: support the festival financially, or volunteer for the morning or evening shifts to help vendors set up or break down. However you support, celebrate, or reflect today, we thank you for working to dismantle your own internalized white supremacy & divest from unearned privilege in our ongoing fight for liberation for all people. Today is a day for those of us who identify as white to recommit to Black liberation and freedom, so think global AND act local❤️‍🔥 See our stories for links to sign up and contribute to this beautiful festival. From the organizer and Dancer/Director/Curator of MC Arts & Culture: “Our family-friendly commeration pays homage to the ancestors and lifts up our youth. Good food, incredible music and sensational vibes!” juneteenthcommunityfestival.info

“Problems Created by Poverty ‘Solutions.’”

In our fifth event in the series, we’re taking a closer look at the ways that the “unintended consequences of good policy” (and private philanthropy) can do more harm than good.
