Co-creating my life with God as a sober human being is nothing short of miraculous. Our Higher Power really knows the desires of our hearts and what makes us truly happy 😀. Yesterday, Canada lost former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a man who had a profound and everlasting impact on my life. I am so grateful for the opportunity he gave me, a young naive woman who had just finished her post grad degree in Toronto, and was hell-bent on doing something with her life to save the world. I'm not going to discuss his politics, but instead focus on his humanity.

PM Mulroney's parliamentary secretary, Len Gustafson, hired me as his legislative assistant in 1984. In this capacity, I provided the PM questions I thought the opposition MPs would ask during daily Question Period to throw the government off its game. The PM, and then-Deputy Prime Minister Don Mazankowski, approached Len to ask if I could go work in the DPMO and brief PMO to prep them for daily Question Period. PM Mulroney gave me a front row seat to the inner workings of our parliamentary system, our Canadian federation, and access to Cabinet meetings which lead to meaningful friendships with Cabinet ministers. I even got to meet former Russian president Gorbachev and look him directly in the eyes before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I was constantly bumping into PM Mulroney in the Langevin building and in the PM's office on the 3rd floor of the Centre Block in the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. He was kind, lovely and hilariously funny. He routinely had everyone in his office bent over in absolute stitches!!! (Some of his aides are, to this day, my dear friends.) The opportunities that working on the Hill, and the PMO, set the trajectory of my life, including meeting Larry many years in the future.

Thank you, Prime Minister, for your generosity, grace and contribution to our glorious and wonderful Canada. You will be deeply missed by those you've left behind. RIP and may your memory be a blessing. Love Sheri XXOO by @surthrive.life
