One year after they reclaimed their forest, the 52 Jenu Kuruba families are still there. Still fighting. ✊

Every safari ticket sold in India’s Nagarhole tiger reserve funds the system that tries to erase them.

This is what colonial conservation looks like: parks for tourists, eviction for the people who protected these forests for generations.

Real conservation isn't a ticket booth. It's Indigenous people, on their land, leading.
Their land. Their forests. Their rights. 💚

Five years ago today, Karapiru Awá passed away. His smile, warmth, and kindness were all the more remarkable given the indescribable tragedy inflicted upon him by non-Indigenous society.

In the 1980s, outsiders killed his wife, son, daughter, mother, and siblings. Another son was wounded and captured.

After wandering the rainforest alone for 10 years, Karapiru was miraculously reunited with one of his sons. He then returned to live among the Awá people and started a new family.

In 2021, Karapiru got Covid-19 and didn’t make it.

Karapiru’s story shows what forced contact can mean for uncontacted Indigenous peoples.

"Science Museum, don't greenwash Adani!"

📢 We protested outside the @sciencemuseum in London! The uncontacted Shompen people are facing complete annihilation because of a project to turn their island into the new 'Hong Kong of India'. Skyscrapers, a casino, hotels, an airport and military base will replace their forest, if we don't stop the Indian government and companies who want to get involved, like Adani.

Adani is a powerful Indian conglomerate, who also give money to the Science Museum in London. We're telling the Science Museum to drop Adani.

Did you know that many national parks and Protected Areas were created on Indigenous peoples’ lands without their consent?

Birendra Mahato from the Tharu people in Nepal spoke at the #OurLandOurNature gathering in Nairobi, the first global Indigenous gathering to #DecolonizeConservation. He described how Indigenous territories are turned into national parks, tiger reserves and even trophy hunting reserves without the people who live there ever being asked.

For many, conservation sounds like a good thing. But for Indigenous peoples, this model of conservation is a form of land grabbing, and it has already forced many people off their lands across the globe.

To fight this colonial approach, the Indigenous participants published a joint declaration. It sets out their demands for a conservation that respects Indigenous peoples’ rights, and it deserves to be read and shared.

"Conservation is a continuation of this neocolonial approach to everything about what was found in Africa," said Gedion Kanchori, a member of Kenya's Maasai community, whose ancestral lands are a world-renowned destination for wildlife tourism.

In an interview with Sovereign Media's Ahmed Kaballo, Kanchori challenged the modern branding of Western-backed wildlife and nature conservation initiatives.

"Conservation projects are often presented as community-led initiatives to protect the land and the animals," noted Kaballo, before asking, "what part of that story is missing from the bigger picture?"

Highlighting the systemic erasure of indigenous expertise, Kanchori said: "Since time immemorial our people conserved the environment before...people from the Global North [came] with the ideologies of how we should best do it."

Kanchori then drew a direct parallel between the modern Western-dominated conservation industry and historical colonial tropes, such as attributing the "discovery" of Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro to European explorers like Johann Ludwig Krapf and Johannes Rebmann "as if there were no people before."

Kanchori's comments suggest that Western-led conservation models function as an extension of historical land grabs and cultural displacement under a green guise, particularly through how they treat African land as an empty wilderness requiring Western governance.

"They are trying to actually replace us - not only our policies, not our way of life - replace us wholly on our land," Kanchori said. by @survivalinternational

Ehuana Yaira Yanomami talks about how the Yanomami Indigenous live in communal houses in the forest, and she highlights the difference between their shared way of life and the more individualistic approach of most non-Indigenous people. Ehuana also reaffirms her desire to continue living collectively, alongside her people and within her forest.

URGENT 🚨 Guarani Kaiowá Indigenous people have been murdered in Brazil.

In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, there’s been a rush of violence against Indigenous people, after President Lula was voted back into power. Mato Grosso do Sul as a state had more votes for the far-right opposition candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, who claimed to be the ‘true elected president’ of Brazil.

Indigenous organizations Aty Guasu (@atyguasu) and APIB (@apiboficial) are denouncing these attacks—which include murders, hit and runs, death threats, and acts of intimidation. There have also been threats to poison the water sources of Indigenous communities.

Indigenous Terena people, also in Mato Grosso do Sul, have had similar threats.

All these reports need to be investigated and those responsible be held accountable under the law.

📣 This violence needs to stop now! We’re pressuring the Brazilian government to act.

You can pressure the government too - send an email in support of the Guarani Kaiowá: svlint.org/GuaraniKig (link in bio) ✊ by @survivalinternational

HUGE WIN FOR INDIGENOUS RIGHTS! ✊🏹

Brazil’s President Lula has been reelected in a dramatic comeback. The Indigenous rights movement in Brazil is celebrating this new wave of hope. 💪

We saw the results come in with massive relief, as the defeated far-right candidate had already openly declared himself an enemy of Indigenous peoples.

That said, we’re straight back to work. Despite Lula’s victory, there’s a lot to be done in Brazil on Indigenous rights. And with a Congress dominated by the far-right which will try to push many anti-Indigenous bills, we’re getting ready for a long struggle ahead.

We’ll keep pushing for the demarcation of Indigenous territories, especially those which are home to uncontacted Indigenous peoples.

✊ We remain steadfast, strong, and full of determination. For Indigenous peoples, for nature, and for all of humanity! by @survivalinternational

What the hell? 🤯

The French government’s decided to become the largest shareholder in French mining company Eramet that operates the world’s largest nickel mine in Indonesia.

Why’s that bad? 🤔

The mining concession overlaps with the territory of uncontacted Hongana Manyawa people. The mine’s operations pose a clear threat to their survival.

What does the law say?

Any project on Indigenous territory must happen with the free, prior and informed consent of the Indigenous people living there. But uncontacted peoples can't give their free, prior, and informed consent, and therefore no project that infringes upon their rights could possibly go ahead legally.

👉 After our warnings, the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund divested from Eramet, citing “serious human rights violations against uncontacted Indigenous peoples.”

The French government, however, has chosen to increase its stake. ️⁉️🤷🏻‍♀️

We're calling on the French authorities to immediately end their support of Eramet if they won’t respect the rights of the Hongana Manyawa, and to demand an end to all mining activities on their territory.

The energy transition cannot be used as a pretext for the destruction of an Indigenous people.
