After months of bringing unexpected bursts of color to New Yorkers’ commutes, Love in Transit has reached its final installation this month at Penn Station.

The project from artist Sue Gilbert has transformed spaces normally reserved for advertising into colorful works of art, created simply to give New Yorkers something uplifting to encounter along the way.

The final collection, Threshold, is fittingly about transition: the quiet moments when one chapter ends and another begins, and the space between who we were and who we’re becoming.

And to mark the final chapter, we’re giving one of you a piece from the beginning.

One winner will receive a 10x10 canvas print featuring artwork from the very first Love in Transit installation.

Reflection… introspection… what do we see? This is another new piece inspired by contemplation. The boat represents my journey; the sea is my life. At the moment it is calm with pleasant ripples. The boat is still. It’s true, I am recuperating from another hip replacement. This keeps me pretty inactive, all considered. But my reflection smiles at me. I feel as though the moons have my back. It is slow and mysterious, this healing process. Patience… contemplation… I must surrender.

“Comforting my Beast.” Our newest artwork. This comes from a personal experience that holds many shades of meaning.

I took a shamanic journey many years ago where I was asked to go down into an underground cavern to sit with my darkness. I wasn’t sure what kind of darkness I would find, but I headed down a long stone stairway and passed under an archway into a cavern. In the dim light, I was startled by a huge shape towering above me. With oily drops spilling down its shiny seal-like skin, it was scary and repulsive.

I stood my ground and shouted something like “go away, you Ugly Repulsive Thing!” I was hoping it would flee, or melt. Instead, the shape kind of slumped. To my astonishment, tears began to slip from its tiny eyes. It looked down at me, utterly devastated.

My heart immediately reached out. “Oh, no! I didn’t mean to hurt you,” I said. “I’m so sorry. Please -let us sit together.” I patted the bench and we sat down silently side-by-side, the repulsive slimy dripping Beast and I. As I took a deep breath, connecting silently with it, it relaxed. I began to feel a sweet sort of kinship rising between us.

In this piece, I have added an enormous light to the cavern to show the power of love for reconciliation and healing. I also made myself younger and gave the Beast a furrier coat in a lovely purple. 💜

Happy Valentine’s Day! This is Susan Bird’s heraldic emblem for love. Ancient knights wore it on their armor as they battled darkness for the light of love. Sweethearts presented it as an embroidery to their beloveds. Families hung it over their doorsteps as a reminder of shared heart values. We are merely moving it forward to this time. There is a certain nobility to loving, as it brings out the best in ourselves. Would you not agree? 🩷💟🩷

I live on a lake in the Pacific Northwest. Occasionally, when the water is still and the light is just right, I see the trees on the opposite store and the pale blue sky reflected on the water in reverse symmetry. Sometimes I want to turn it upside down.

There’s always magic in reflection.

I’m thinking of this especially now, as we glide into a new year. It’s a quiet time on my winter lake, time to reflect and to look at reflections. To pause. Breathe deeply. Pause. And in the space between breaths, in the quiet expansion of focus, what’s not really there can vaporize allowing new ideas to tip-toe in.
