korean in italy
slowing down to notice
susuhan [soo-soo-han]; quiet beauty in simplicity
POSTS STORIES REELS
welcome to my quiet corner. i’ve been thinking about the word ‘susuhan’, a korean word that holds a special place in my heart. for me, it’s not just about an aesthetic. it’s a way of slowing down and noticing the beauty that’s already here. i’ll be using this space to share small, intentional moments from my life somewhere in europe. no grand lessons, just honest observations on finding peace in the quiet. if you resonate with this pace, i’m so happy to have you here. - j #susuhanlife #slowliving #minimalism #intentionaliving #quietmoments by @susuhanlife
the forest, on the day the drizzle stopped. the branches wet. the leaves wet, growing heavy. rain sinking slowly into the trunks. the moss at the roots, softer and damper than before. the heavy, wet leaves fall and settle on the ground, layer over layer, clinging to one another in the damp. the wet ground beneath the wet leaves lets the smell of earth rise up between them. and me, standing on that soil, sending sup-nae-eum to every last cell of my body. #susuhanlife #susuhanwords #koreanwords #forestbathing #petrichor by @susuhanlife

i love picnics. you don’t need much for one. the setting is as light as it gets, but there’s so much to enjoy. the weather, the wind, the season, people passing by, and other picnickers nearby, enjoying their time just like me. with all of that around you, time seems to slow down. you sit side by side with someone, or lie down next to each other, in the most comfortable position. when your body relaxes, your mind does too, and deep conversations come out on their own. and those are the talks i remember the longest. who would you take on a picnic? #susuhanlife #picnic #picnictime #slowliving #simplepleasures by @susuhanlife
recently, i stayed in a very old house while traveling in spain. i arrived late at night and fell asleep before i could even look around. the next morning, i opened my eyes to light slipping through the curtain by the bed. it was so thin it couldn’t hide everything behind it. the warmth, the pale light, the shadows of the trees. i loved everything that came through it softly. i think people have curtains too. we hang invisible curtains to keep ourselves hidden. but sometimes they wear thin, and for a moment you catch what someone is thinking, what they’re feeling. there’s a word i reach for when that happens. bi-chi-da. like that curtain in spain, i don’t want mine to be too heavy. just thin enough to let what’s real show through. #susuhanlife #susuhanwords #koreanwords #morninglight #quietlife by @susuhanlife

when the cold wind touches my skin, the fresh air feels good. but at the same time, i feel restless for no reason. a little lonely. a little sentimental. old memories come back. i start missing someone. i want to take the long way home and just keep walking. i want a warm cup of tea. the leaves that were once green and full slowly dry out, change color, and fall. they tell me another year is almost over. when i look around, everything has changed. only then do i notice how much time has passed, that the season has turned. this is what autumn does to me. and like every year, gaeul tanda. #susuhanlife #susuhanwords #koreanwords #autumnmood #quietlife by @susuhanlife

tiny socks pinned in a row. a baby lives here, i think. a lace tablecloth. maybe a grandmother who keeps everything just so. a neon work uniform. someone who leaves early every morning for their family. sneakers still dripping. two little brothers who never stop wrestling, i’d guess. every line full of bedsheets. guests must have just left. i never meet the people who live there, but every time i pass a laundry line, i feel like i know them a little. #susuhanlife #italylife #laundryline #slowliving #artofnoticing by @susuhanlife
the full moon last week meant a little more to me than usual. it was the chuseok moon, rising on korea’s biggest holiday. i happened to be on an island that week, from the night before the full moon to the night after. so for three evenings, i walked down to the sea to greet it. dal-ma-ji. each night it looked a little different, and each night i stayed longer than i meant to. watching it rise slowly, i felt that small flutter again. funny how something so simple can still do that. after all, the moon is always there. maybe a full life isn’t that hard to find. even the everyday turns special when you go looking for it on purpose. what small thing will you go looking for today? #susuhanlife #susuhanwords #koreanwords #moonrise #intentionalliving by @susuhanlife
