Happy birthday, Baba.

It’s funny how we’ve known each other for less than a year, yet somehow you became one of the most important people in my life.

You are one of the very few people who truly made it into my “furry heart” (a Brazilian expression we use for people like me, who love deeply but don’t easily let others reach the most vulnerable and authentic parts of who we are). And with you, it happened so naturally.

You became one of my survival backpacks, one of those people whose presence becomes part of daily life, part of emotional safety, part of home. I genuinely can’t imagine my routine anymore without you in it.

Even when you disappear on WhatsApp or take forever to reply, somehow your presence is still there. I catch myself thinking, “there goes Baba, doing Baba things again.”

Today is your birthday, and I feel incredibly privileged to keep discovering more of you, more of your soul, every single day.

I hope this new year of your life brings many beautiful moments, many celebrations, many springs. I’m also slowly learning that birthdays for non-Brazilians are usually a little more low-key, meanwhile, we Brazilians turn feelings into public declarations. Which explains why I’m here writing you an open letter so you fully understand how important it is for me to celebrate your existence today.

Thank you for being exactly who you are. Thank you for allowing me to be vulnerable, for being vulnerable with me too, and for making our conversations a place of comfort, safety, and care, for both of us.
