Okay Alexis… ❤️‍🔥

Just looking back at some of our Teachers Take the Mic moments, and this solo deserved its own post.

She got up on that stage, took the mic and absolutely went for it. And honestly, I love seeing our teachers have moments like this.

More of these to come because there were way too many good ones to leave in the camera roll haha.

You're nervous, and that's okay! Everyone is during their first lesson. But now, you have a better idea of what to expect!

We break up our intro lessons into 3 categories:

1. Chat about singing experience/singing goals
2. Asses vocal level and do some vocal warmups
3. Sing through a song and introduce healthy vocal techniques

We can’t wait to see you around the studio💛

Hey! 👋🏻 Welcome to Sutherland Shire Singing 🎤

We are a singing school passionate about helping singers grow in their voices and their confidence.

We do this in three key ways:
🎶 We teach with technique
💛 Shower our students with support
📝 Plan your practice

Technique
All of our teachers are expert vocal coaches and ensure that our students are learning to sing with correct technique. They'll help you focus on the feeling of singing, or if you'd like to look a little bit deeper, they can explain vocal anatomy, the mechanics behind what happens when you sing.

Support
You get that learning to sing can be a daunting thing, so we're proud to offer an encouraging and supportive community to all of our students.

Practice
When it comes to singing, you get better, the more you do it, so practising between your singing lessons is really important. We provide practice plan templates that you can fill out with your teacher so you know exactly what to do.

Dm us to book in an intro lesson. We can't wait to see you at one of our studios 😍

Ever wondered why your voice can still feel dry after you have a big drink of water?

Lucy has a simple vocal care tip to help this: direct steam. 💨

But why use a steamer if you’re already drinking water?

Drinking water hydrates your body, but it doesn’t directly moisten your vocal folds as you swallow. It takes hours for the water you drink to have any affect on your vocal cords.

A steamer delivers moisture directly to your vocal cords.

Either before, or after hours of singing or talking, direct steam can be a helpful addition to your vocal-care routine.

It’s a good reminder that looking after your voice isn’t just about what happens while you’re singing. The care you give it around your singing matters too!

A little teacher tip from Lucy to keep in your vocal-care toolkit. 🎶 by @sutherlandshiresinging

Only have 10 minutes to practise singing? 🎤 Don’t waste them!

You don’t need a full hour to make progress with your voice. Sometimes, a short, focused practice session is exactly what you need to keep building consistency and working towards your goals.

Here’s how to make those 10 minutes count:
🎶 2 minutes of warm-ups
🎶 3 minutes of exercises that target what your song needs
🎶 5 minutes of singing through your repertoire and working on one tricky section

The key is to practise with intention, not just sing for the sake of singing. 💛

And remember, 10 minutes of focused practice is better than waiting for the “perfect” time to practise.

Save this for your next short practice session! ✨ by @sutherlandshiresinging

It’s never too late to start singing. 🎶

Charlotte had always wanted to learn, but it took until her 50s to finally decide, “Yep, I’m going to do it.”

And honestly, I love that.

You don’t have to start singing when you’re young. You don’t need to have performed before. You just need to decide you’d like to give it a go.

Seeing adults find the confidence to do something they’ve wanted to do for years is one of my favourite parts of teaching.

And then watching them get up on stage and actually do it? Even better. ❤️

Thank you, Charlotte, for such a lovely review. We’re so glad you found us! by @sutherlandshiresinging

Featuring our student, Kayla! 🎤

Kayla started singing with us as a teenager, and now she’s 21. We’ve watched her move from our kids’ schedule and concerts into our adult lessons and performances, and it’s been so lovely to see how much her voice has grown along the way.

Things that once felt difficult are now muscle memory, which means she’s ready to tackle the next milestone. That’s one of the really special things about learning to sing over time - there’s no finish line. There’s always something new to work towards and grow in 💛

And one of our favourite things? Kayla’s dad joins her in some of her lessons, and they sing duets together!!! At our last Brass Monkey concert, they even got up on stage and sang together. 🥹

There’s something pretty special about getting to share music with your family, isn’t there? by @sutherlandshiresinging

It usually starts with making some very silly noises (ie. warm-ups) 😂

Warm-ups get your voice ready to sing, but they also do something else that’s just as important.

When everyone is making silly sounds together, you stop worrying so much about what you sound like. There’s no pressure to sound “good” because everyone is doing the exact same ridiculous thing haha.

And once that awkward bit is out of the way, people relax. And just have fun singing.

You just have to be willing to sound a little silly first. 💛 by @sutherlandshiresinging

This might just be one of the sweetest reasons anyone has ever walked through our studio doors. 💛

Michael sang professionally when he was younger, but when he joined us a few years back, he had a whole new audience in mind: his kids. He wanted to get his voice back in shape to record an album that his children and grandchildren could treasure forever.

He chose to record songs from his favourite artists - Engelbert Humperdinck, Paul Anka, Elvis Presley! I love listening to him sing, but what I love most is the special part singing has played in his life, and the joy it brings him. by @sutherlandshiresinging

We don’t always realise how much tension we’re carrying when we’re stressed.

Sometimes it’s the jaw. Sometimes it’s the shoulders. And sometimes... it’s the tongue

Charlotte’s got a really simple stretch she recommends for releasing some of that tongue and jaw tension, particularly before or after heavier voice use.

Because if you’re asking a lot from your voice, it’s worth paying attention to what the rest of your body is doing too. by @sutherlandshiresinging

Your nerves will never go away. And they don’t need to...

We see a lot of students fight their nerves. And to be honest, that’s the natural instinct.

Feeling nervous doesn’t feel nice. And it can often make you pull back or hesitate when you sing, which then makes it harder to sing! So people try to get rid of their nerves.

But the technique we teach isn’t to try and get rid of them.

(Because that’s kind of a futile goal anyway. And you will most likely just get frustrated that the nerves don’t go away.)

We teach our singers to let the nerves sit with you, but just in the backseat.

Let them come along for the ride, but don’t let them drive the car.

There are vocal techniques to help you stay in control even with the nerves there. And the better you get at these techniques, the less the nerves will make you wobby

If you’d like any tips on dealing with nerves while singing, comment NERVES and we’ll reach out with some info 💛 by @sutherlandshiresinging

There’s a different kind of joy in watching a student become confident enough to sing right alongside you. 💛

They’re not worrying about every note anymore they’re just enjoying themselves, trusting their voice and showing you what they can do.

And honestly, that’s pretty special. by @sutherlandshiresinging
