I had the pleasure of participating in the Mountain Workshops video journalism workshop in Bourbon County, Kentucky this past week. Each year they choose a different county in Kentucky, and participants produce photo or video stories about people in the community. Video participants pick a person out of a bowl and have to produce, direct, shoot, and edit a short documentary about them in only 4 days. I was incredibly lucky to pick Lanette Freitag, a farmer, textile artist, and incredible human being. I met so many amazing people and am just feeling so inspired and confident and grateful 🥹🫶🦙#kentucky #farmer #textiles #sustainability#sonyfx3 taken in Bourbon County by @suttonofyork

Repost from @forthelbc for another ArtNotAds short documentary that I directed, shot, and edited ✨

For our latest #ArtNotAds feature, we are thrilled to spotlight Long Beach visual artist Narsiso Martinez (@narsisomartinez). Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, he migrated to the US at the age of 20. Martinez’s artwork reflects on the socioeconomic disparities between farmworkers and agribusiness owners.

“My drawings…[are] set amidst agricultural landscapes. Drawn from my own experiences as a farmworker, I pay homage to the people who toil in the fields picking the produce we consume. In an attempt to highlight their plight, my curiosity for materials led me to integrate graphics found on produce boxes as a way to add context to the figures,” Martinez says.

He holds an MFA from CSULB and has received many honors, including the LA Emerging Artist Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant and the Stanley Hollander Award. His work has been exhibited at the Orange County Museum of Art, the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach (@molaa.art), and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Here’s another video I shot and edited for the ArtNotAds series over at grassroots org @forthelbc 😌!

“Meet our latest ArtNotAds feature, Tomisin Oluwole, a literary and visual artist whose primary mediums include poetry, painting, and fashion. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Tomisin moved to Long Beach in 2015 to study fashion and is currently obtaining her Masters in linguistics while also pursuing her creative interests. As a multidisciplinary artist, Tomisin is constantly inspired as well as fascinated by the abstract and by ideas that indirectly evoke feelings of self. It is this underlying theme of self and the various aspects of oneself that tends to inform many of her works.

Each month we publish an interview with a new artist, whose artwork will appear across our website instead of the advertisements that traditionally litter other media platforms.

Went to the land of my ancestors this summer with @mitchellormitch and stayed with our Viking brother @littlelofotenlodge 🍉

Also recently joined a Scandinavian dance class at a local Nordic cultural center where I am one of very few people under 70 years old. Embracing the beauty and the dorkiness of my people! 🇳🇴🐟🧶🌄 taken in Lofoten Islands, Norway by @suttonofyork

Mitchell and I have been going to an average of five national parks every year since 2018. Last year we only managed to go to two, including Glacier National Park shown here 🫎

I’ve been feeling completely overwhelmed with a never ending list of todos while trying to survive and thrive in the ever increasing pressure and pace of this capitalist hellscape. This year I have decided to prioritize getting out of my comfort zone, focusing on getting involved with my local community, and pouring my energy into one or two specific causes (tbd, decisions decisions).

Instead of being paralyzed by helplessness at not being able to fix all of the world’s problems, maybe the world would be a better place if we all helped our neighbors and became experts in one or two areas of change.

Just posting on here for accountability (and to show off these cute film photos taken by @mitchellormitch in my absolute favorite national park 🌄💕). The rest of the national parks will have to wait, and I really hope the parks and all of us survive this heartless and hateful administration. by @suttonofyork
