The Mosaic of our Ummah
39.5” x 50” (including frame)
Acrylic on canvas

This painting is inspired by my travels this past summer where I had the privilege to perform umrah; an Islamic pilgrimage to Islam’s most sacred place, Mecca.

In the holy cities of Islam, there’s a particular observation that stood out to me: there is a diverse tapestry of people, representing various walks of life, cultures, and ethnicities. This is the inherent beauty of Islam, where despite our global origins, we are bound together as one human race and, as Muslims, form an indivisible nation—the Muslim ummah—united in the singular purpose of worshipping God.

These themes of diversity and unity are depicted in my painting. The circumambulating wave of people around the Kaaba symbolizes the diverse backgrounds of individuals. Despite their differences, the portrayal ensures no emphasis on distinctions; they all wear the same attire, eradicating societal constructs of status, wealth, and any human-made indicators that may elevate one above another.

Further, the clouds in the sky symbolize the continents of the world, illustrating how Muslims from diverse corners of the globe join together at the Kaaba for pilgrimage. In this collective gathering, the concepts of diversity and unity are reinforced. Muslims, like fragmented pieces of diverse colours and shapes, come together to form a harmonious mosaic with a singular purpose: to worship Allah.

This painting captures those peaceful moments in the night where it is just you and your Lord. Looking up at the starry sky and feeling the comfort that Allah is listening.

The name الله painted in the sky is a constant reminder that you’re never alone and His guidance is always close by; regardless of how vast the universe is.
