Back to oil paint!

For the past several years, I’ve worked almost exclusively with soft pastels and coloured pencils. During my second year at KABK, I decided to put painting on hold and devote myself to the more multidisciplinary directions of my practice: rope sculptures, drawings and video works. It was an important shift, and one that continues to influence my practice today.

Here are two paintings in progress, beginning with a grisaille: a monochromatic underpainting rooted in the tradition of the Old Masters.

I've always been drawn to the materiality of oil paint: its viscosity, its ability to be moved and to be built up. I think it’s this physicality that resonates so deeply with my fascination for the body’s plasticity.

What does it take to truly understand a body?

Last year I spent time at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, studying the anatomy of centipedes as part of my artistic research for my work at Prospects at Art Rotterdam.

I was fascinated by the tension between the organic and the mechanical: bodies made of delicate, repeating structures, almost engineered in their complexity.

I drew them again and again: not to simply capture what I saw, but to understand how they are built, to get their anatomy into my hands, into my memory, and eventually in my own visual language.

It was a great honour to work within the scientific collections and to look so closely at these beautiful and intricate creatures.
