It’s that time of year when the knits fly off my needles because I don’t have to knit sleeves. I’ve had my eye on this striped polo for a while. It took me like four hours to learn the Italian tubular cast on, but once I figured that out it was easy going. I got the yarn from a shop in Saigon, and the fabric knit up so well. It’s soft and drapey and only cost me $7 for six balls. I’m bringing an empty suitcase just for yarn next time I go to Vietnam. My latest creation! The tutti frutti tee put me through the wringer. It took me three tries to get the picot hem right. Don’t even get me started on undoing duplicate stitch 😭 The result was so worth it though, because this is the cutest baby tee! I used a yarn I bought at @sandpiperfiberworks in Bridgeman, Mich., last year when I was on vacation with my sister-in-law and my best friend. I’ll always remember the trip now when I wear this! Why Ăn Chưa? In Vietnamese, it means “Have you eaten?” Implicitly, it means “I care about you.” When I was in college, I’d FaceTime my parents every day. My mom and I could ramble on about anything, but my dad was a man of few words. He only ever wanted to know two things before he would pass the phone on to my mom: “How are your grades? Have you eaten yet today?” I’m not as close with my parents these days. Our phone calls can be tense. But my dad will always ask me if I’ve eaten yet. And it’s how I know he cares about how I’ve been doing. Naming this supper club Ăn Chưa is my way of carrying that care forward. The world can feel uncaring. So many people will tell you that you don’t owe anyone anything, ever. I couldn’t disagree more. Ăn Chưa is an invitation to sit down, be taken care of and take care of each other. We did our second annual indie bookstore crawl as book club this year and it was a blast. We started at @eastcitybookshop in Capitol Hill and ended at @kramerbooks in DuPont Circle, to celebrate our book club’s return to the store in June.
