For Suzy Hoodless, it starts with knowing the story behind it.

Clients increasingly want to understand where the pieces in their homes come from, who made them and how they were produced. For designers, having that knowledge means being able to specify with greater confidence and give clients the insight they increasingly expect.

99% Invisible: The Unseen, Under-valued Craft of the Interior Designer

We all love looking at photos of glorious interior schemes, but images of seemingly effortless beauty and elegance, featuring serenely beaming clients do not tell the whole story. What actually lies beneath the glamour? The designer’s application of skill and technical knowledge is 99% invisible to practically everyone. Yet designers are only feted on the visual result and not appreciated or rewarded for their ‘under the surface’ expertise. So how can designers communicate these talents? How can they educate their clients to truly appreciate what they do? And how can they ensure they are remunerated appropriately?

Today was a good day!

Helford River life. Crisp morning light, a three hour walk to @kestle_barton a wonderful tucked away contemporary gallery showcasing Cornish Life, a pit stop at the village store, THE best pasty’s @gearfarmpastyco . Walking through all seasons, pouring rain, boiling sunshine and everything in between. Along creeks and through dappled trees, jumping over streams and navigating our way back home. Tired but happy.

Designers Guild closes its doors.

This is a very sad day. I worked for Designers Guild in 1994, in the HQ on Olaf Street. I assisted Tricia and her creative team. It was my first ever job after dropping out of university. I wanted to get on and work. I got the job because I could type I think. Tricia taught me everything. I watched her from my desk right outside her office, supporting her and her creative team.

I learnt that no is not an option. I watched as Tricia wanted fuschia pink sofas in the showroom windows and her brother and CEO Simon Jeffrey’s wanted the more commercial navy option. I watched as she oversaw the flowers in the building. I learnt to my peril once that this was not a task to be taken lightly. I supported the team planning and shooting the photo shoots and presenting the collections to the Editors. I learnt to multi task, to work bloody hard and to always find a way. My life long love of colour and design began in those days.

We had the best office restaurant in town run by her then husband Richard Polo who ran Orso and Orsini. I owe so much to Tricia and I wish her and Simon and all those at Designers Guild the best of luck and to enjoy the wonderful memories of so many decades.

Tricia is completely remarkable and there is no one like her. Thank you Tricia for making all of our worlds ALOT brighter.

I’ll be joining @lizziedehayes @adamellisstudio & @ennivarnas with Fiona McCarthy @thechicshopper moderating, for a discussion exploring the world of bespoke wallcoverings - from the creative possibilities to the process behind bringing a design to life.

Bespoke wallcoverings can completely transform a space, and I’m looking forward to sharing some of my experiences, as well as hearing from the other panellists.

💗 Scent

So often overlooked, yet such an essential part of what pulls a space together. Somehow scent completes the whole experience, creating a mood and atmosphere that works in tandem with every picture, every piece of furniture, fabric, light and object within a room.

Scent has the ability to transport us - to a particular moment in time, a place or a memory. It adds another layer to how a space is experienced, making it feel not only seen, but truly felt.

For me, the most successful interiors engage all of the senses, and scent is often the final detail that brings warmth, emotion and life to a home.

💡 Designed in collaboration with @drummonds_bathrooms, the Dual Light is a striking contemporary wall light that blends luxury with modern style.

Inspired by Murano glassmakers and vintage Scandinavian designs, its sculptural form makes a bold statement while providing elegant illumination.

Expertly crafted, the light can be installed vertically, as shown here, or horizontally, offering versatility depending on the space.

💫 A quiet corner to work, create and think.

When we designed this apartment in the Helios building at Television Centre, it was important that every area earned its place. A compact study space sits comfortably alongside the living area, making the most of the apartment's generous light and lofty proportions.

The interiors take their cue from the building itself - clean lines, honest materials and timeless details - creating a home that feels connected to its history while supporting the way we live today.

Small spaces invite big ideas.

A powder room is one of the few places where you can embrace pattern, colour and texture without holding back.

For this powder room at AllBright, we layered richly coloured tiles with a bold, graphic wallpaper, a high-gloss violet vanity and deep burgundy ceiling. Rather than competing, these contrasting materials work together to create a space that feels immersive, playful and unexpected.

We're often asked how to mix colours and patterns successfully. The key is finding a common thread - whether that's tone, scale or texture - and balancing statement pieces with quieter elements. Here, reflective surfaces, curved mirrors and polished fittings bring light and calm to an otherwise richly layered scheme.

Designing memorable interiors is about creating moments of surprise, and sometimes the smallest rooms offer the greatest opportunity to do just that.
