@sva_mfaca is turning 40 this year and my design got selected for the mural in the lab! And IT IS REAL NOW!

As a Computer Arts student myself, the concept is quite literal: we and computers jamming with the world wide web in the Big Apple. I didn’t got to enjoy the lab too long bc of the Covid but hopefully the coming students can have more fun here.

Wanted to thanks every alumni voted for me and all the student worker helped on this, this can’t be this REAL without you guys.

Also, Jose said they gonna update the loading number every year😉 glad someone got the point hehe!

MICHAEL DONDERO + SHAY DONG
@foggymoors @shaymarch__

HVFF alum @knechtions has a film called Commuting in this year’s Fest. Fittingly, he conducts our filmmaker interviews while doing exactly that : hands-free, on his drive home from the Bronx. On this ride, he called Michael & Shay.

Last year, they brought us Nostril. This year, we asked them to make something wonderfully weird for us.

Michael Dondero and Shay Dong are the creative team behind Nostril, the wonderfully gross, beautifully crafted & funny stop-motion short that screened at HVFF last year, which has since made its way to fests around the world.

Michael is an Emmy-winning #filmmaker, animator & writer. Shay is an #artist specializing in character design, fabrication, modeling & sculpture. Together, they met at SVA’s MFA Computer Arts program @sva_mfaca , where Nostril began as their capstone film. Nostril can now be watched on YouTube & Bloodstream TV.

For 2026, we invited them back into the HVFF universe, this time to create our official Festival short promo video, combining stop-motion, stratacut animation, practical #handmade #weirdness & a whole lotta love.

And when the promo called for dancing? They kept it appropriately DIY: Michael filmed his partner dancing around their apartment, then used her movements as reference for the animated dance sequence you see on-screen.

If you haven’t caught the full HVFF promo film yet, you’ll see it where it belongs: glowing on the #drivein screen before the films each night of the Fest.
