HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY TO THIS GENTLEMAN

i didn’t realize until a moment ago that i posted this guy half a decade ago. it’s one of my favorite things i’ve created, even to this day.

some background about what he’s all about: i have a soft running series of character portraits featuring folk instruments. this one features the Kantele, a traditional Finnish instrument with a beautiful unique tone.

the whole character is actually quite influenced from various tidbits of Finnish culture. the kantele he plays is made from the jawbone of a pike, and the original title of this piece ”From His Throat Came A Swamp, And I Drowned In It” - both are features taken out of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. the burning head is fashioned after a bear skull, an animal that holds a lot of cultural significance to the country.

i’ve always been oddly fascinated with Finland, the language and culture, owing to my discovery of the many incredible metal bands they export. it isn’t as prevalent a fascination for me in my adult life, but it comes out in places like this where i have free reign to simply express it without expectation. reflecting on it, i realize it’s gifted me the chance to connect with people who now hold a cozy place in my heart. toivon, että te elätte hyvin 💚 by @svartvinterart

saying goodbye to one of my closest friends today (he’s okay) (he’s just moving out of state with his gf) (we’ll get to hang out again sometime)

made these two to gift him and his gf. the Pokemon squad is us and our friend group. the Blade portrait for one of the first things his gf and i connected over when he introduced us (Puppet Master, if you aren’t cultured). i’ll be missing him, but i stay proud to be his friend and to see him off in the best way i think i can. wish him luck, please. it’ll be a long drive for the two of them!

NU UDRA, the nasty squid from Monster Hunter Wilds. Capcom completely cooked when they made this thing. the switch axe will likely be my signature weapon for the rest of time

i have two monsters left before i’m ready to move on to past games. Jin Dahaad, i’m saving for after i finish these next couple of commissions. i have so much creative energy right now, i just *gotta* get stuff out!
