Man, @caerimonia_nidrosiae was a lot. Meant in the best way possible. Those who've been around back during the "publicity peak" of what was created in Nidaros feel the same way from what I've heard so far.

People and lives have changed, in parts a wholedamn lot, but the essence that drew us all across Europe 10-15 years ago was still there. Less furious, more settled. Riper but very well aged. Sounds cheesy, I know. But with Nidaros and it's creative vessels being some kind of haven and core of my personal understanding for music, art and emotion this was truly something that moved and grounded me at the same time.

Seeing both, the "old ones" and "newer wave" of this combined, really gives a vibe of coming home after being a lifetime away.

Performancewise, those closing chapters were something truly special. A retrospective on what's gone on the first day, and remembrance of a spirit still living on although long buried on the second day is a concept hard to grasp emotionally.

Rounding this off with catching polar lights and rehearsing @annalapwoodorgan the "Lord of the Rings" music in the Nidarosdomen makes it even more surreal.

Definitive albums in definitive editions.

Sometimes it doesn't need a ton of fancy gimmicks for a special edition. For Darvaza, a statement combined with a beautiful display piece is more than enough.

Love what they did here, especially since they skipped the "second albums suck" phase and delivered a monument to themselves. Way up in my 2025 toplist, although "catchier & cleaner" which surprisingly works perfect here.

I missed the whole "TikTok Black Metal thing". Really. I didn't knew about it until...this dropped in it's digital form.

We're skipping the whole discussion because it already happened under the flood of memes and articles. Thing is - that's a record that eats many releases of recent years for breakfast.

But - and that's my critique here - it's a demo. A rather refined one, but it lacks the refinement that would make it an album for me. Whether or not there's AI in the music (I'm too less of a musician to judge, but I have found no substance in claims that there is), it certainly has some vibe of a guy making other music going "yep, let's make BM".

Whatever it is - it provoked reactions. And that gives it some intensity I like my weird niche music for.

One of my absolute surprise finds in '24 and one of the rare "heard ten seconds, loved everything about it" moments. Labyrinthus Stellarum, doing Cosmic Black Metal. Nah, not the total black void of Darkspace, but the quirky & weird Sci-Fi stuff.

Doesn't just look like 80's alien toys, also sounds like it. Synths straight outta low budget trash movies without being too cheesy about it, proggy guitar work and so many creative ideas.

Imagine the guys from Summoning not reading Tolkien but Perry Rhodan and drinking way too much cola in their early phase.

Even more impressive: three albums in three years with a progression curve very rarely seen. And it's a bunch of real youngsters making this stuff in currently orcinfested Ukraine. Go check these guys out if you have the slightest love for anything mentioned in this post.

Lunar Aurora are easily among the most important names in German Black Metal as long as they existed and beyond. A pretty flawless discography, a unique style and depth and no shenanigans or drama. Simply great crafters of their art.

After vinyl versions being completely unavailable for the last ten years, there's finally the second round of the full album discography rereleaes from @dsr_productions . With delays, but it's nice that the project seems to come along.

Absolutely nothing is public about people involved here. Harsh, raw, cheesy in a beloved and trashy way are the aspects jumping at you here, but there's a bit more going on behind that.

The whole album feels like the vessel for some "more sophisticated" musicians channeling a rawer side, like ideas and riffs that happenend during rehearsal sessions refined into a project, but ultimately kept raw.

And while the references of early Gorgoroth, Akitsa and Svest every review repeats are there, there's a feeling about the catchy riffs popping up here I can only describe as "if some finnish goats howling at the moon had started from punkrock".

Lovely stuff - in case you're up for basement sound and some cheese.

"Make a wall of the darkest possible sound, but make it sophisticated" - that might have been the goal of Eneveldes latest album.

Admittedly, I really have a thing for musical minds like B. Kråbøl - that dude's cleanly splitting his different artistic approaches into own projects instead of merging everything in one that ends up messy. The progressive, chaotic and dissonant stuff ends up in Misotheist, the full steam Black Metal in the family name titled "the ladies of the dynasty are out, let's jam" project and whatever unlight is left in here, Enevelde.

If you were into the massive orthodox/occult wave of the early 2010's this album might sound familiar, yet way better aged than yourself after dropping into that hole somewhen between the peak of the hype and the start of the 'rona.

Sawing guitars, repetitive riffing right between hypnotic and monotonous (in a great way), conjuring vocals, precise and distant drumming instead of a high tempo. Everything about this feels like a more modern, yet very well ripened interpretation from 12 years ago, all condensed into one pitch black wall of sound. Good stuff.

One of the most persistently upper end discographies Black Metal has ever seen 👊

Many fail with their second album, many peak with it, a lot do the same with their third and a whole bunch of bands ends up in utter mediocrity somwhere around those.

And then there's Whoredom Rife. While they never made it into my "personal stand-out tier", they're hovering right beneath it. Dropped their first EP with a bang, first album a year after and went full throttle through the valley of failure on the way to their second, where so many bands lose their spirit. Repeat for the second, third and fourth.

Can't remember any more consistently great output that refines itself a little more with each incarnation. And that while neither experimenting much nor getting boring. And on top being a force live, in presence as well as in their craft.

Also, that absolute stand-out beauty of the vinyl editions 🤌

Lots of clips already around, but here's a take with pretty good sound.

Seeing Nagelfar live, without ever thinking that would happen, felt like going full circle with some things. 20 years ago, "Virus West" was one of my three starting albums into Black Metal and it hasn't lost any of it's glory and personal value for me. Seeing these guys, obviously loving what thy do felt like the peak that was never to be reached in personal music experiences again ten years ago.
