In honour of AAPI month, for all my life is lived in celebration of what it is to be a daughter of Oceania.

The land from which I come is boundless and lush, carpeted by ancient rainforests, peppered with endless islands, and presided over by the raw and primordial powers of our most sacred Pacific Ocean.

My heritage is vastly greater still. For my ancestors who voyaged across the sea from island to island traversing far beyond where western sailors claimed to be the end of the world, for my ancestors who stewarded the untold wonder and wilderness of the pacific for a thousand generations before me, for my ancestors who resisted those that dared to subvert our humanity for the fruit of the land we were born upon, for my ancestors who were stolen from home and never returned, I will spend a lifetime safeguarding their legacy.

My life, a love letter to Melanesia — to my Far Eastern Archipeligo.

It is a long 50 000 years of history that precedes me. I am every story that has come before, and preface to every story that will follow. I am composed of Melanesia, of the soil that lies an extension of our ocean, of the vibrant coral on our sparkling reefs, of the winds that brought our sails to uncharted territory. This is the inheritance my predecessors have left to me.

For past. For present. For future.

Imbued within me is the lifeblood of my people, I am a sister to the millions of children with whom I share the blood of Te Moana Nui A Kiwa, a child of the ocean that connects me to my wantok across the sea. I am forged by the community that upholds me, sustained by the solwara that roars through my veins.

For I am not alone, I am never alone. I exist entangled in the web of Oceania’s infinite story, a foot soldier of our majesty. As a component in an interdependent world of the person with the land, the seas, and the spiritual, I exist transcendent of myself in the soul and stories of my people.

Oh, what an honor to live and die for my homeland, for my people - what a glorious people we are. Oh, to live and die for what, if not my revered, dearly beloved, and immeasurably beautiful Melanesia.
