Day 348 🇮🇹: walking from the Uk to Kenya

Kish reached out and offered to book a hotel in Milan for us, after speaking we decided to turn it into a challenge, 60 km in 2 days - with the days getting shorter and roads blocked it led to an interesting day taken in Pavia, Italy by @swaeonearth

Meet Radka 🇨🇿🌍

Two months of walking through Turkey, straight off the back of finishing Albania. Low on resources, peak summer heat, and absolutely exhausted. I needed a break, so I went to Georgia.

That’s where I met Radka. 🇬🇪

We clicked almost instantly and ended up travelling through the entire country together. Somewhere along the way, we decided she’d join me for the Italy stretch of my walk from the UK to Kenya — a section I’d previously skipped because of Schengen visa restrictions. Thanks, Brexit. 🥲

And honestly, I’m glad we did.

Since then, I’ve watched this woman navigate mountains, long walking days, wild camping, unfamiliar countries, and all the little challenges that come with life on the road. Through it all, she’s been a rock.

She’s taught me a lot about resilience, perspective, and what it means to show up when things aren’t easy. She’s an awesome woman, and a reminder of just how much women are capable of when they put their minds to something.

106 days since we first met in Georgia.

400km+ walked together.
5+ mountains climbed.
4 countries visited.
3 seas swum.
5+ languages between us.

And we’re still going. ❤️

Today last year,
I was still looking for my tent,
To test this tent,
I slept in my friends garden,
I had all my gear,
Still connected to the WiFi,
I got in and had my night,
The next morning my laptop was gone,
My friend had come during the night to show me how easy it would be for harm to find me,
I persisted,
“I’ll just stay out of sight”,
Knowing there was sense in what he was saying,
I started the expedition anyway,
Trusting that the world would be kind to me,
Not entirely knowing what I was looking for in taking on such an adventure,

Well - It’s been a year,
I’m glad to report,
The world I’ve found is kinder than the one I’d known,

For me the best part of walking the world would be the people,
It took me replying to a Facebook message to realise that,
I have a lot more to enjoy in having connections,
I liked the questions I was asked,
I felt the message came from a good place,
I had time - so I wrote back
This wasn’t the first,
They’ve been many,

There’s a elderly Kenyan woman,
She asks questions and she’s funny,
I’ll reply,
I don’t know her,
But why not?
She’s gone out of her way to message me,
Why me I don’t even know,
But she does and I appreciate that
I suppose I have a lot to appreciate from people,
And not just connection,

Online and in person the word I’d use is,
Support,
I’ve received a ton,
I do what I can to be resourceful,
Still I don’t know what this journey would be without,

People have been very kind to me,
In a world that I was led to believe wasn’t,

And so to the world you have my thanks,
Thank you that no harm has found me,
Thank you that everything I’ve lost can be replaced,
Thank you that food and water find me, be it from your fruits that I’ve find,
Or the people that have found me,
I’m thankful
